Recently, individuals affiliated with the deposed dictator Sheikh Hasina faced attacks while en route to pay tribute at Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s recently burned-down residence in Dhaka. Their rallying cry? "Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu"—an ironic chant that once symbolized the fight for Bangladesh’s independence but now serves as a battle cry for repression.

History has shown us what happens when they do—first in 1975, and again from 2014 onwards. In both cases, they initially won democratic elections only to disenfranchise the people and impose total tyranny.
Do they deserve another chance?
I recently made an appeal to the interim government in Dhaka, arguing that a political force responsible for the deaths of nearly a thousand people and countless injuries cannot be allowed to continue as though nothing has changed. They should not be permitted to use the same symbols or cult figures, such as Mujib, that they weaponized to oppress the population over the past decade. There is a clear moral, political, and legal case to be made here.
Some of my friends have raised legitimate concerns that outright banning them could push the party underground, creating further instability and chaos that the country can ill afford at this moment. I agree with this caution and therefore suggest that their activities be suspended rather than permanently banned. The suspension should be subject to reversal, contingent upon a thorough investigation into the culpability of leadership and rank-and-file members who carried out heinous crimes against humanity. After such an investigation, the party could be allowed to operate again on the condition that those responsible for violence are removed from the party and brought to justice. Moreover, the party should be required to reevaluate the symbols and ideologies it used to justify its tyranny. Much like denazification, this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Bangladesh to set an example for future tyrants. If we miss this chance, the rise of another despot will be only a matter of time.
To my friends in the interim government: If you believe they should not be outlawed, or at least suspended, that’s your prerogative. But if you choose this path, remember that they must be afforded their legal rights under whatever constitutional arrangement you are operating, and I will have to defend those rights. You cannot have it both ways.
