@lsparrish The part of this I get is that how you define distance is a choice -- euclidean geometry is a nice system with bilinear vector products. I don't see what's illuminating about 2^2, but I'm not great at seeing deeply into math...

That bet is no longer attractive, but “not a home run” was part of the distribution prospectively. I don’t remember if the gwernpost back then said the second part but it’s not an esoteric point.

@goblinodds In chapter 1 in the original, a guy gives a dinner speech that ends with a particular wording that felt a little weak in my first reading, a bit flat in context. It turns out a couple hundred pages later, he was telling people to their faces just how he was going to screw them..

@ambimorph @chemosh933 @atmoio My problem with "it's just software" is, so would be a close-enough low-level emulation of my own brain. And while I'm not sure *that* has the same kind of experiences as me, I sure wouldn't want to bet against it.

@ambimorph @chemosh933 @atmoio And when I ask why not, they usually say some variation on "it's just software", e.g. there's nothing happening in between queries. I have no idea about your thinking, except I expect you've thought about it more and I'm curious.
