Rewatched THE MUMMY (1999) last night and goddamn, this movie is still perfect adventure cinema.
But the thing that really stood out this time was Imhotep.
Arnold Vosloo is fucking terrifying in this movie.
I love that Imhotep doesn’t need to constantly be jumping out at people or doing elaborate monster shit to be scary. Some of the creepiest moments are when you barely see what he’s doing. You hear what is happening to his victims and your imagination does the rest.
And the idea of wandering around those enormous, dark Egyptian ruins knowing that this thing could be somewhere in the shadows is genuinely unsettling.
What I especially love is that Imhotep doesn’t just wake up and immediately look completely human again. His resurrection is a process. He’s this half-decayed, barely recognizable creature who has to consume people and gradually regenerate himself until he can become whole again. The visual effects were actually designed around that progression, with ILM creating different stages of Imhotep’s transformation.
That’s such a great monster concept.
So many undead characters come back from the dead and are basically just the same person with a spooky filter slapped on them.
Imhotep has to earn his way back to being human.
And the other thing that makes him work is that he’s not just some mindless evil mummy. Stephen Sommers has talked about deliberately giving him an emotional motivation. Imhotep is doing all of this because he wants to bring Anck-su-namun back, and Sommers actually wanted audiences to understand his motivation even while knowing they had to stop him.
That gives Vosloo something to play beyond “ancient monster.”
He’s terrifying, but he’s also completely consumed by grief and obsession.
And then you’ve got Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Oded Fehr, Kevin J. O’Connor, the practical effects, the CGI, the desert locations, the huge action sequences and Bruce Broughton’s score.
It’s basically the perfect combination of horror, comedy and old-school adventure.
THE MUMMY somehow manages to feel like a horror movie, an Indiana Jones adventure and a ridiculous 90s blockbuster at the same time.
And Imhotep is a huge reason it works.
Arnold Vosloo walked into that role and somehow made a 3,000-year-old resurrected corpse feel genuinely dangerous.
Completely FALSE information circulated recently saying Christopher Nolan would direct a Star Wars trilogy about Darth Vader.
Fake news like this, made up entirely to create engagement, are unfortunately republished massively because people want to believe them and don't bother verifying the source of the information.
Christopher Nolan won't announce his next project for more than a year and NOBODY knows what it will be. Don't believe ANY post claiming he's going to make some supposed film.
