In the late 1600s, the world's first futures exchange (Dojima Rice Exchange) had an interesting trading schedule.

Each day, officials lit a cord on fire, and trading continued until it was extinguished.

• Price at extinguishment = official closing price.

• Officials dumped buckets of water on people trading after fire went out.

• Traders making money would fan the box flames to keep the fire burning (so trading would last longer).

• Traders losing money would try to blow the flame out or extinguish it in other ways to end trading.
