@RAF_Odiham Perhaps need to train and equip some more teams to stay in the home countries - Scotland, England and Wales could all do with fire-fighting support too, and it could have made a huge difference to the duration and extent of their fires.

A renegade polymath with binoculars and a beard , Bill was invariably funny and occasionally furious . He loved birds and loathed those who harmed them . He was delightfully unpredictable , sparky , smart and at times a bit spiky . Critically he really knew his stuff , and his passion was true - he didn’t just pick up his binoculars on telly , he went birding whenever he could . So he was genuine and that’s why we loved him , he never needed a script , and took scant interest in any he was given . He didn’t like rules and often neglected to play by them . This may have frustrated the serious and the worthy but it always amused his audience - he was an utter joy to be with . I recall finding a Black Woodpecker in a damp Dutch park with him once , he gazed at it intently , sighed , put down his bins , turned to me and just smiled . A massive grin . No words , just a beautiful childlike bliss . That says all you need to know about Bill Oddie .

Sadly we’ve not only lost a goodie , we’ve lost one of the besties .

From statutory nature targets to long-awaited deer management reform, Scotland’s legal framework will now better support nature recovery. This is a moment to celebrate. 🥳

But the real work happens on the ground.

To truly heal our landscape, we must move beyond static protection. We need to ‘protect the best’ - defend our most vibrant remaining patches of nature - and ‘restore the rest’, by empowering land managers to jumpstart natural processes where nature has been pushed to the brink.

Nature doesn't stand still, and neither can our laws. It’s time for a dynamic approach that lets Scotland’s nature come bursting back to life.

🌍 Nature loss is a national security threat – but Scotland can lead the solution

A new national security assessment published by Defra – and compiled by the Joint Intelligence Committee – delivers one of the starkest warnings yet about the state of our planet. 👇 link in thread.

The report concludes that "global ecosystem degradation and collapse threaten UK national security and prosperity" and that “biodiversity loss is putting at risk the ecosystem services on which human societies depend, including water, food, clean air and critical resources."

But buried within this sobering assessment are references to the solution. The report recognises that "nature is a foundation of national security" and states that "countries best placed to adapt are those that invest in ecosystem protection and restoration."

By becoming a #RewildingNation and delivering on its commitments to protect and restore nature, Scotland would be investing not just in healthy ecosystems, but our future safety, resilience and wellbeing.
