Banihal Hills: Where India stops feeling like India

I am on my Amarnath Yatra, and my first stop is ‘Banihal Hills.’ It is the place where India stops feeling like India. Geographically, Kashmir (India) extends upto PoK, but the moment you cross these hills, everything changes. The surroundings, people’s behaviour switch immediately, the way they see you changes entirely. You won’t feel welcomed, no matter what.

The fact that the government is bound to deploy nearly 1-1.5 lakh security personnel including CRPF, CISF, BSF, ITBP, JKP etc. every year, just to ensure that Hindus, in a Hindu majority country, could safely complete a pilgrimage itself tells a lot about the place and its people.

P.S. When I first went there, I observed a lot of strange things, but couldn’t speak much because I was so overwhelmed and surprised by Kashmir that I felt like I may have missed something. But as I complete my second visit, I will bluntly spell out ‘Kashmiriyat’ and the significance of this sacred pilgrimage for you all. Watch this, and stay tuned for more.
