More or less welcome noises from the Prime Minister today on housing, water, and energy (North Sea aside).
If this government can prove to the public that we as a country can *do stuff*, people might be more willing to accept taxation to fund things we can all benefit from.
I want to live in a country that can do stuff. Housing the homeless, building council homes, and using empty properties for council housing is a good start.
The most interesting about this is the 2034 deadline. Shorter maturity gilts will be run off passively, longer maturity gilts will be actively sold (at a significant loss). They're betting this will save money in the long run, but I'm not so sure.
today @bankofengland caved - too little, too late - to growing critique of Active QT damaging UK's fiscal/gilt position.
1. Pause gilt sales till April 2027 (switch to Passive QT).
2. Resumes sales after, 20bn yearly, to DMO (back to Active QT)

So the Bank of England is now going to sit on all the 2049-plus dated debt it holds until it matures. Going to be quite interesting now to get the real-world proof of just how much of a premium active selling was adding to yields. Quite a bit, judging by the reaction so far
I don't think this can be true. One in 7 have heard of it, & 51% of those—so one in 14 adults, nearly 4m people—have actively distributed it. It started in Sept 2020 & comes out monthly. If they each only did it once, that's > 100k paper sellers per issue
