CSF leak means the meningeal covering was breached. (People should search pictures of needle tips under the microscope to see how many million bacteria they can carry). The knife used to stab him was in no way sterile. There was the highest probability of meningitis. That requires observation for at least 5-8 days.
Remember even the Lumbar puncture done under sterile conditions is considered a high-risk procedure. Though the chances of Iatrogenic meningitis are rare because of a better understanding of skin prep and sterilization the spontaneous CSF leak creates negative Intracranial pressure that requires at least 5-7 days to become normal given the leak is fixed and Dura matter was repaired. The associated positional headaches due to CSF leaks are very palpable and get worse when the patient tries to stand.
So either the doctors were lying or exaggerating or they were too good to expedite his recovery.
The jury is still out on this.

Dear @AppleSupport, we noticed a *HUGE* security issue at MacOS High Sierra. Anyone can login as "root" with empty password after clicking on login button several times. Are you aware of it @Apple?
