Yesterday night, armed bandit groups launched coordinated attacks on Burmawa in Rabah LGA, Sokoto State, killing and injuring residents and abducting several others, mostly girls.

In a separate overnight raid, the same pattern of violence struck Gida Amada in Wurno LGA, where at least 10 girls were taken. Local say fear can force families to flee, schools to close and normal life to stall as security presence remains thin.

These repeated attacks are eroding livelihoods, weakening social structures and deepening displacement across the Northwest region. Banditry is steadily hollowing out rural life and turning once safe communities into zones of fear, displacement & uncertainty.

The Story Behind This Picture

There is an interesting story behind this picture. It was taken during the Future Investment Initiative (FII) Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in October 2021. On the sidelines of the Summit, late President Muhammadu Buhari was scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with the Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman at his Al‑Yamamah Palace.

As expected, the President’s advance team had already departed from the hotel to prepare for the meeting. We were seated in our media vehicle, waiting for Baba to come down so we could proceed to the Palace. Then, a sudden signal came through that the Crown Prince had requested that Baba remain at the hotel; he would come to personally meet him there because he said Baba was like a father to him.

Within minutes, the entire hotel was overtaken by Saudi security. The Managing Director of the hotel, along with his entire senior management team, came down to personally oversee preparations and receive the Crown Prince. I asked one of the Saudi protocol officers about the unusual gesture and he explained that “For the Crown Prince to leave his Palace and come to a hotel to meet a visiting leader, it means he holds your President in the highest possible regard.” The hotel staff also confirmed that such a thing had never happened before in the hotel’s history.
