By the end of 300 level, I had over 15 carryovers.
That was when it finally became clear that I could not graduate with my classmates.
I had to split the failed courses and my remaining courses across two extra sessions. While people I started university with were preparing for final clearance and NYSC, I was still calculating which courses I could afford to register for without creating another academic disaster.
It was embarrassing.
I avoided certain conversations because I was tired of explaining why I was still in school. Every new session felt like proof that everyone else was moving while my own life had paused.
But somewhere inside that mess, I stopped waiting for school to give me confidence.
I started thinking seriously about the kind of life I wanted outside my result. I worked at a bakery before NYSC. After service, I taught for ₦20,000 monthly. My first corporate opportunity did not come because my academic record was impressive. It came because I could speak, learn and show that I had something useful to offer.
I eventually graduated after six years with a third-class degree.
That result followed me out of school, but it did not get the final say.
Today, I have built a career in HR, worked across different industries, supported professionals, helped people secure better jobs and created opportunities I could not even imagine while staring at those carryovers.
I will never romanticise academic failure. It was painful, expensive and largely avoidable.
But I also know this: a bad academic chapter can delay you without permanently defining you.
Sometimes you leave school with a result you are not proud of and still build a life you are deeply proud of.
2025 wrapped:
- Worst year of my life
- Lost my greatest mentor, my dad
- Lost my loving grandmother
- Got a job offer in Canada. Applied for visa. Rejected. Lost the job.
- Lost my 2 cars: GLE 43 & C300
- Got laid off for the first time in ~6 years
- 2x rejected for the global talent visa
- Made the worst financial decisions in my adult life
- Got into the worst shape of my adult life
- Needed surgery. Did surgery. Surgery failed.
- Lost my 4 year relationship, became an emotional wreck
- And all of these are just the ones I am comfortable sharing publicly.
In 2026 we go again: revenge.
It’s not always roses and success stories.
But we become strong by rising again, no matter how many times we crash.
I want my DM to be flooded with good and amazing clients because I know someone is somewhere who needs a personal shopper and market errands in Nigeria buh not sure of how to get to one.
Dear X. Do your thing.
