You're supposed to get homesick at times.
You're supposed to feel like the underdog at times.
It's called growth and the rewards for your resilience are coming.

Nobody touched him.

Second quarter, second career start, and he tucked the ball and ran. He planted. The knee went. Torn ACL, right leg, no contact involved.
​
His team won 42-0, their first shutout of a conference opponent in twenty years. He watched most of it from the sideline.
​
He was born in Austin, one of four kids. His father grew up in Salt Lake City and earned Eagle Scout, and that sash hung in the house all through his childhood. He earned his own.
​
The summer before seventh grade he started running drops and throws in the yard with his older brother, another quarterback.
​
Four varsity seasons outside Austin: more than 8,700 passing yards, 121 total touchdowns. As a senior he led the entire state of Texas in passing.
​
Auburn offered. Oregon offered. Penn State, Texas A&M, Tennessee.
​
He committed to Texas Tech in December of his junior year, to the staff that had offered him first.
​
He'd decided long before. He watched the Red Raiders beat Texas in overtime from the stands with his mom, went back to the hotel, and prayed about it.
​
Week 1 of last season, he broke a 64-yard touchdown run and hit 20.2 miles per hour. Eighth-fastest player in the country that week.
​
In September the starter went down at Utah. He came off the bench for 230 yards and two touchdowns in the second half. Final: 34-10.
​
Between thirty and thirty-five of his relatives were in that stadium. His dad's family never left Utah.
​
Then two starts of his own. Then the knee.
​
"If it's gonna be somebody that's going to be totally dedicated to getting back and attack the situation," his coach said, "there's nobody that attacks anything like Will."
​
The team moved on without him. Conference title. Playoff. Orange Bowl.
​
In the offseason they signed the top quarterback in the portal to start ahead of him. By spring that plan had fallen apart.
​
He couldn't do anything about any of it. So he did the only thing in front of him.
​
He wasn't cleared for spring ball. He threw anyway. Player-run seven-on-seven all summer with receivers who'd never caught a pass from him.
​
This month his coach told ESPN that if they were playing right now, he could do everything.
​
Full medical clearance: August 21. Week 1: September 5.
​
Nine months from a knee that gave out on its own, to QB1.
​
