A devastating “inland tsunami” has hit Nepal.

A sudden flash flood surged through the Nepal–Tibet border region around 9 a.m., sweeping away entire riverside settlements, bridges, vehicles, police posts and customs facilities.

The likely trigger? A 4.4-magnitude earthquake that may have caused an ice-and-rock avalanche, temporarily blocking the river before the natural dam suddenly burst.

At least 17–22 people are confirmed dead, nearly 400 are missing, and more than 700 MW of hydropower capacity has been affected.

Democratic congressional nominee and former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander made the remarks at a press conference held Tuesday at New York City Hall, organised by the Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) in protest against RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s scheduled programme at Madison Square Garden on August 29.

Speaking at the press conference, Lander said, "I'm here as a proud Jewish New Yorker to say that Madison Square Garden should not allow the ‘spewing of hate’ from Bhagwat.

Lander also drew a historical parallel with the Nazi rally held at Madison Square Garden in 1939, when tens of thousands gathered at the venue. He said the event involved people “cheering religious hatred and violence of a very similar sort to what Mohan Bhagwat and the RSS are proposing.”

“MSG said it would not host hate-filled, bigoted rallies again,” Lander said. “It should not host this one.”

VIDEO | Nuwakot, Nepal: At least 105 Indians and 37 NRIs are among the nearly 400 persons missing after the devastating flash floods in Nepal's Rasuwa district bordering Tibet swept through villages and damaged critical infrastructure on Wednesday, officials said.

Most of the Indians were headed for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra in Tibet. A sudden, massive flood swept through two central Nepal districts bordering Tibet killing four people, causing extensive devastation at settlements along the river and damaging at least a dozen hydropower projects early Wednesday.
