In June 1994, 13-year-old Nicholas Barclay disappeared after a basketball game in San Antonio, Texas.
Three years later, his family got a phone call from Spain. Nicholas had been found.
His sister flew to Europe, identified him as her brother, and brought him home. But the person she brought back was not Nicholas.
He was Frédéric Bourdin, a 23-year-old French serial imposter with brown eyes and a thick French accent. The real Nicholas had blue eyes and light brown hair.
Bourdin told the family he had been kidnapped by a child sex ring and tortured in Europe. He said his captors had changed the color of his eyes with chemicals and forbidden him from speaking English.
The family believed him. For almost five months, they lived with a complete stranger.
But a private investigator noticed that his ears didn't match Nicholas's in old photos, and the FBI exposed the fraud.
After his arrest, Bourdin made a disturbing claim. He told agents the family had known he was a fake all along, and had only taken him in to hide what really happened to Nicholas.
His accusations were never proven.
The real Nicholas Barclay has never been found. What happened to him remains a mystery.

He married at 30.
Not because he was in love.
Because he was “behind.”
His friends had kids.
His parents were asking questions.
Every wedding he attended felt like a reminder.
She was kind. Stable. Ready.
That felt like enough.
They bought a house within a year.
Posted photos with captions about “building legacy.”
Two years in, the arguments started.
Not loud.
Just constant.
Money.
Time.
Sex.
In laws.
Small things that never felt small.
He started staying late at work.
Not because he had to.
Because home felt heavy.
She felt it.
She asked once, “Are you happy?”
He said, “I’m just tired.”
They had a son in year four.
For a moment, everything softened.
But babies don’t fix fractures.
They just add noise to them.
Sleep disappeared.
Intimacy disappeared.
Patience disappeared.
He began fantasizing about silence.
About an apartment alone.
About weekends where no one needed him.
One night, after another argument about something forgettable, she said:
“If you don’t want this life, say it.”
He didn’t answer.
Silence again.
He cheated six months later.
Not with someone special.
Just someone who didn’t know him long enough to resent him.
He told himself it was a mistake.
He told himself it was stress.
He told himself it meant nothing.
But it meant something.
It meant he was already gone.
She found out.
There was no screaming.
Just that look.
The one where respect dies before love does.
They divorced when their son was six.
Split custody.
Shared holidays.
Awkward birthday parties.
He moved into a one bedroom apartment.
At first, it felt like freedom.
Quiet.
No tension.
No expectations.
Just him.
Then the weekends without his son started feeling longer.
Then the calls got shorter.
“Dad, I’m busy.”
Teenage years.
Schedules.
Friends.
Distance.
His ex remarried.
Her new husband coached the boy’s soccer team.
Showed up to school events.
Fixed things around the house.
His son started saying “we” when talking about home.
He didn’t mean it maliciously.
It just slipped out.
He turned 52 in a quiet apartment.
Microwaved dinner.
Muted TV.
Phone on the table.
He scrolled through old photos.
Wedding day.
First ultrasound.
His son asleep on his chest.
He realized something brutal.
He didn’t leave because he was unhappy.
He left because he thought happiness was supposed to feel exciting.
He confused peace with boredom.
Responsibility with imprisonment.
Stability with suffocation.
Now the house he once escaped was full of laughter again.
Just not his.
Some men think they’re trapped.
Sometimes they’re just being asked to grow up.
And by the time they realize the difference,
It’s too late.
End.

I’m so in love with this saying, “If you love sleeping, start waking up for Tahajjud; If you love money, start giving more charity; If you love listening to music, start listening to Quran. If you love food, start fasting; because your love for Dunya should not outweigh your love for Allah.
So say this duʿa even if your heart feels dry:
“Rabbanā lā tuzigh qulūbanā ba‘da idh hadaytanā.”
Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us.
Say it scared. Say it tired.
Say it unsure. Just say it.
Because fear of losing Allah is proof you still belong to Him.
