During her last hours, former Bangladesh PM Hasina Wajid wanted Indian military intervention to disperse protestors as Bangladesh military had refused to "beat up" protestors.

Many hoped that the Bangladesh Army, a top contributor to the @UNPeacekeeping , would be the adult in the room. They would refrain from shooting at unarmed civilians like the police and BGB, but they turned out to be the same, taking combat position with heavy weaponry and shooting at unarmed civilians. Such is the extent of rot under 15 years of Sheikh Hasina‘s despotic rule that even the @theBDarmy, which is still viewed with respect in Bangladesh, has been transformed into her personal henchmen. She can demand such a level of fealty from the armed forces, the law enforcement agencies, the judiciary and the civil administration because she can get away with it.
Do we need a bigger example of this than her brutal clampdown on @bdbnp78 men less than nine months ago? The international community, esp. the @StateDept for all its huffing and puffing, did nothing. Emboldened by what happened then, she straight up went for a genocide this time, because she knows she will face no consequences.
That’s why she used @UN-marked helicopters to throw tear gas at unarmed protesters, she used UN-marked armoured personal vehicles to clamp down on protesters. She very well knows that the UN won’t do anything beyond the proverbial chiding and she can live with it.
After this episode, if the UN is true to its ethos, it should revoke Bangladesh’s eligibility for peacekeeping now. But it won’t. After all, the UN did nothing despite impassioned calls to ban those who serve at RAB from peacekeeping. Don’t be surprised when you learn in a few days that these policemen, BGB and army personnel were rewarded for their massacre by being drafted into a lucrative UN Peacekeeping mission. That’s how the cookie crumbles at Sheikh Hasina’s Bangladesh — and that’s how lame the UN is, that’s how hypocritical the Western world is.
THREAD: Bangladesh has used at least one UN-marked vehicle to quell student quota protests. We found pictures taken in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, on July 21st showing the UN insignia on an armored personnel carrier.
According to credible sources, block raids are being conducted in different locations of Dhaka city, where students from schools, colleges, and universities are being arrested from their homes. Reports of sporadic gunfire have also been received from areas such as Rampura, Banasree, Badda, and Bashundhara.
In the meantime, we have received various footages showing these arrests taking place in front of military personnel. Members of the 14 Independent Engineers Brigade and the 46 Independent Infantry Brigade are participating in the ongoing operation in the capital of Bangladesh. The commanders of these two brigades are BA 4638 Brigadier General S. M. Zakaria Hossain and BA 4897 Brigadier General Imran Hamid respectively.
If any individual is unjustly arrested, tortured, or disappeared during the ongoing block raids, or if any citizen in these areas is injured or killed by gunfire, the above brigade commanders will be held fully responsible.
Human lives vs. metro rail station? What is more valuable? Hasina had the time to visit the vandalized train station, but she did not visit a single dead body of the students whom the security forces shot dead under her instruction. This speaks volumes about her.
A @BD_Air_Force MI-171H helicopter bearing the @UN logo has been used for bucket missions during the ongoing student and public protests for at least two days. Two eyewitnesses reported that it was used to drop water on fires and that tear gas shells were fired from this helicopter, which bears the registration UN7682.
Recently, United Nations spokesperson stated in a press briefing that the use of any military equipment bearing the UN insignia is prohibited outside of UN missions, regardless of the necessity.
The photo was taken at 4 PM on July 19, 2024, in the Mohakhali area. Its metadata has been preserved.
Note: Details of the photographers are withheld for safety concerns.
