So this is the rent situation in the Maldives now:

MVR 18,000 for a one room, completely unfurnished apartment, plus a MVR 25,000 deposit or two months’ rent upfront.Are we renting an apartment or financing someone’s retirement? 💀

Some of these places don’t even have a lift, yet landlords have the audacity to demand 20k + just to move in.

At this point, the prices are absolutely ridiculous. A basic one room apartment should be mvr 9k to 12k max, depending on the location and condition.

18k for an empty room and four walls? Be fucking serious.

MDP did not join, support or put any meaningful effort into the people-led movement to stop this from happening. Nor did the party mount any serious effort of its own. Apart from a few councils, most MDP-majority councils even failed to publicly condemn the move.

As I told many people at the time, the political calculation was quite simple:

1. PNC passes it.
2. Islanders get angry.
3. MDP gets a new election pledge: “We will undo it.”

Many young people within MDP genuinely supported our petition and helped the movement. But the old guard chose good old politics.

Apparently, whatever irreversible damage PNC can do over these two years is an acceptable price if that damage creates political advantage for MDP later.

And this is exactly why people like me ( relax, we are the insignificant minority ) keep saying the same thing, none of the existing political parties care about Maldives as much as they care about their own politics and getting back into power.

Sometimes stopping something bad today should matter more than being able to campaign against it tomorrow.

I have quoted Shahid's tweet here, but this criticism is not directed specifically at Shahid. It applies broadly to the opposition political leadership and the choices they made throughout this issue.

If the opposition opposes the 40% FX conversion requirement…. then what alternative do they propose that actually brings tourism USD into Maldivian banks and reduces dollarisation?

Because simply saying “this will hurt resorts” doesn’t answer the national currency problem.

The principle behind the reform is sound: Maldives cannot sustainably have an economy where its biggest industry earns overwhelmingly in foreign currency, while the country providing the islands, reefs, infrastructure, labour and sovereign jurisdiction suffers from chronic dollar scarcity.

That said, 40% of gross revenue may be poorly calibrated… especially if legitimate USD expenses vary significantly from resort to resort.

And workers should not be used as the instrument of dedollarisation.

For now, protect employees’ existing USD salaries and service charges.

First, make MVR genuinely valuable.

Bring the official/banking USD rate and the parallel market rate closer together.

When a resort worker can confidently receive MVR 15,42, walk into a bank & actually obtain USD 1,000, being paid in MVR instead of USD ceases to be such a major concern.

That is the real test of whether the rufiyaa has been strengthened.

Don’t strengthen the rufiyaa by taking dollars away from workers.

Strengthen the rufiyaa until workers no longer feel they need to be paid in dollars.

Dedollarisation should be the result of restoring confidence in MVR — not simply an order forcing ordinary Maldivians to hold a currency whose real market purchasing power is substantially below its official value.

Strengthening the rufiyaa strengthens Raajje.

Good luck to those genuinely trying to strengthen the rufiyaa. I also hope the resort industry becomes part of the solution rather than simply resisting reforms…because an industry earning billions from Raajje should also have a stake in strengthening Raajje’s economy and its national currency.
