CHINA’S DEATH PENALTY FOR SERIOUS DRUG OFFENCES — ATIKU REMINDS TINUBU
Former Vice President of Nigeria and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has labelled the Presidency’s decision to drag China into its attack on him as a spectacular self-inflicted wound, arguing that the comparison has only placed President Bola Tinubu under sharper public examination.
In a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku noted the irony of the Presidency treating a routine United States Government response to its diplomatic note as if it were a glowing endorsement, a prize and a clean bill of health combined, while its spokesman carelessly introduced China into a debate that immediately backfired on his principal.
“It requires a special brand of thoughtlessness for a spokesman to try to haul an opponent before an imaginary Chinese tribunal, only to find himself placing his own principal in the dock instead.
“Perhaps the spokesman failed to recall that Chinese law prescribes the death penalty as the maximum punishment for the most serious drug-trafficking crimes. By selecting China as his yardstick, he has inadvertently asked Nigerians to apply the very standard he hoped would damage Atiku Abubakar.”
“The facts are straightforward and beyond dispute. Atiku Abubakar has never been charged or convicted by any court in Nigeria or anywhere else in the world for corruption, drug offences or any criminal offence of any kind. This is a matter of clear public record.
“Yet if the Presidency now insists that China is the proper measure of public accountability, Nigerians are entitled to ask what Chinese authorities would have done in a case involving the forfeiture of $460,000 to the United States Government in a civil proceeding linked to alleged narcotics trafficking and money laundering.
“China is well known for its strict stance on drug-related crimes and official accountability. Forfeiture of questionable funds is rarely the conclusion of official interest; more often it is the starting point.
“And since the Presidency has chosen China as its reference, let us take the comparison further. The Tinubu administration would do well to study how the Chinese criminal justice system deals with corruption, abuse of office and the misappropriation of public resources.
“In China, a president would not sign into law a national budget riddled with scandals, padding and questionable appropriations. In China, a president would not ignore serious allegations that a senior presidential aide created a fictitious government agency. In China, a government would not campaign on ‘Renewed Hope’ only to deliver renewed hardship to its people. These are exactly the reasons the Presidency ought to have been more careful before invoking China.
“That is why the Presidency’s argument has crumbled under its own inconsistency. By bringing China into the discussion, its spokesman has invited Nigerians to judge by the same exacting standard he thought would embarrass Atiku Abubakar.
“President Tinubu may therefore wish to consider whether a spokesman who so lightly walks his principal into an avoidable political trap has genuinely protected his interests. A media adviser is hired to keep his principal clear of landmines, not to lead him directly onto one.
“The Presidency should also cease waving the United States Government’s reply to its diplomatic correspondence as though it settles every question.”
