This case between ANI and Wikipedia has nothing to do with the stack - even an India-based firm can lapse in compliance, policy, and legal matters. There are many examples where Indian firms don’t fully meet compliances. That’s where a strong regulator comes in that applies equally to all orgs in the segment, irrespective of their origin.
Since we are on the topic, this entire narrative of build in India for India only (without any global tech esp from Western countries) needs to get a reality check:
One, it's impossible to run even a single server today (let alone run a whole stack!) without using technology that has contributions/origins from global players.
Two, where’s the advantage, economics and sensibility in reinventing the wheel that has taken decades to mature and stabilise?
Third, this narrative hurts Indian tech firms. Numerous companies' decades of hard work, aided by technology innovation, have finally put Indian tech firms on the global map. Why are we so busy reversing a good thing and denting the well-earned trust of global demand-side users?
Also, in today’s age of open-source-led innovation, restricting technology to one country and domain is unrealistic and unreasonable. Anyone who understands technology knows the need for “collective intelligence.” Any algorithm worth its salt must incorporate diversified perspectives to be truly unbiased.
Lastly, Wikipedia is a not-for-profit outfit and a body fighting globally for ethics and other issues. The rules of engagement for defending sources are well laid out in law.
Ignorance is not always bliss. Those with money, power, and influence must weigh their opinions and their real-life impact before releasing content in the public domain.
My 2c.
Cheers,
