Our 6th Poetry Contest IS NOW OPEN FOR SUBS--SEND US YOUR QUEER NATURE POEMS <3
June 1st - June 7th we'll be accepting submissions <3
Laura Villareal is our lead judge this round--picking the theme of "Nature As It Is: Poems of Queer Ecology"!
In Laura's words: "Queer ecology (which is really just ecology) disrupts presumptions of binary thinking at every turn. Heteronormativity and dualism aren’t the norm in the abundant and radically inclusive reality of nature. The more-than-human world is brimming with queerness and continues to challenge human-imposed limitations on our understanding of sex, gender, and sexuality. Give me your poems about many gendered mushrooms, send me your pantoums about male seahorses giving birth, villanelles about sex-changing clownfish and ginko trees, and sonnets for queer creatures (flora, fauna, and funga). Whatever form, whatever part of nature calls to you. Let’s return together to the truth about our world, overflowing with queerness—nature as it is. Surprise me."

"I was the first creature after the apocalypse,
a bougainvillea, beautiful & tender.
I carry memories of history in my lenticles,
my mother is alive, she lives there too."

"There is no place to flee. I am here for the duration
I say heart is heavy, angel of death all around
no wonder so many hearts just stopped this week"

Reading books isn't consumerism, no matter how many you read. And it is the opposite of anti-intellectual.
You'd be surprised how easy it is to read 30 books a year if you put your phone down more.
"how do you love / a forest on fire / if that forest is nothing but / a body on fire / wildfire / or a hozier song / or the garden of eden / or another smiths song / & loving a house on fire / & loving salt in a wound / & loving overripe strawberries / & loving nuclear winter"
"tell me how to love / decay / how to love nature after its ruin / how to appreciate / ruin / tell me what it means to / love an invasive species / how to explain the beauty of kudzu"
—arushi (aera) rege :: “nuclear winter, burning planet”
