According to Swizz Beatz, DMX only recorded “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem” because he lost a bet (to Swizz’s uncle Darrin “Dee” Dean in a card game)‼️.

DMX initially hated the beat‼️. Swizz (then a young producer whose uncles ran Ruff Ryders) made it in Atlanta, blending New York and Atlanta influences into something stripped-down and atypical for the era‼️. DMX reportedly said it sounded like “rock ’n’ roll,” “not hood enough,” too simple/repetitive (he later compared writing it to “ABCs” or elementary school), and he preferred more substance-heavy tracks‼️. He resisted for a while‼️.

Swizz has recounted that his uncle Dee put the terms on a card game: if DMX lost, he had to do the song‼️. DMX lost, went into the studio (accounts describe late-night or early-morning sessions), and knocked out the lyrics quickly—about 15 minutes, per DMX himself in a GQ interview‼️. He still wasn’t fully feeling it at the time (Swizz has noted you can hear some irritation in the delivery), but they hyped the energy in the booth, which led to the famous “What‼️” ad-libs and the military-cadence-style chorus‼️.

Swizz has repeatedly said that without the lost bet, he (and the track) might not have even made the *It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot* album‼️. Instead, it became one of DMX’s signature anthems, a major crossover hit for the Ruff Ryders crew, and a career-changing moment for both of them‼️. Swizz has joked that DMX “didn’t lose the bet” in the end because of how big it got‼️.

This account comes primarily from Swizz’s interviews (including SiriusXM *Hip-Hop Nation* around 2023, earlier Complex talks, and others)‼️. DMX himself confirmed he didn’t want to do the song and wrote it fast but was glad he did‼️. No major contradictory origin stories have surfaced that overturn the bet detail‼️.
