May 15 - Straw Hat Day (switch to summer straw)
Sept 15 - Felt Hat Day (back to winter hats)
People took it so seriously that wearing a straw hat after Sept 15 could get it knocked off your head.

Men switched from heavy winter hats (felt, wool) to straw hats for summer.

Straw hats were considered out of season, and men switched back to felt or wool hats.
