Otherwarya has always been deeply problematic, so this takedown of LifeOfPuja isn’t surprising. Dressing it up with terms like “savarna” and “liberal guilt” doesn’t make it more ethical. It just gives it the veneer of critique. But at its core, it is just plain and simple discomfort, class-inflected, caste-tinged, at the rise of a woman from rural India.
And there’s also a basic ignorance here about Bengal. For decades, village and neighbourhood communities have organised screenings, theatre, discussions—culture at a truly grassroots level, as a shared practice, especially since the CPIM years. So why is it so hard to accept that someone like Puja can be articulate, thoughtful, and self-aware?
If you've been privileged enough to have access to all these resources and still don't have bare minimum empathy, feminism or rage at bigotry in your body, you're just insufferable
