Excited to share our new paper in @CommsBio on the evolution of yawning in vertebrates!
In the largest study on yawning ever conducted (species N > 100), phylogenetic analyses provide further evidence that yawning is an adaptation for cooling the brain.

Work with @acgallup & me & excellent undergrads!
Across two experiments, we tested for yawn contagion in galahs by presenting videos of conspecifics yawning. We found no difference in response following exposure to yawn footage or non-yawn control footage.
@Evolving_Moloch Studies comparing snake stimuli with modern threats are interesting, but have little to no relevance to the innateness of snake detection mechanisms or the overall support of SDT
@Evolving_Moloch The evidence for Snake Detection Theory is robust. There is great work on infants, children, and non-human primates raised in captivity all suggesting innateness. You are conflating SDT, which proposes narrowly specific cognitive mechanisms for snake detection, with snake fear.
I am hiring a PhD student to study the relation between disgust and moral cognition. Master's degree required. A background in evolutionary psychology is a big plus. Please circulate!
