The tutoring instructor...”It’s a mess,” he said, of the S.H.S.A.T. “It’s one test - one test date. You might get sick. You might get nervous. The test itself is a black box. It tests obscure concepts...” The status quo is unacceptable. The test is neither valid nor reliable.
@ChalkbeatNY Freshman college material. A college student can certainly sub a few days without somehow hurting the student. Though I feel this is a poor choice, there's much worse happening at many of our public schools.
@UFT Though I agree with the general sentiment of this article, you have not established how you define 'FOCUSED'. As far as I know, @NYCMayor team has approached BOTH the issue of the SHSAT and admissions across all NYC schools. Also, 15K students aren't "just a few" students.
"American to Me," a docuseries by award-winning filmmaker Steve James, examines the barriers and challenges to closing the achievement gap in Oak Park, a diverse, affluent and liberal suburb of Chicago, premiering on @STARZ this Sunday. https://t.co/gFYzLskKLm
@edutopia This article claims "Did you know that a significant percentage of the achievement gap between students of color and white students is caused by punitive discipline?". Supposedly supported ( I think ) by https://t.co/P7WOrxMlwj . But that paper doesn't make that claim.
Watch policy team members Jorge Morales and Muhammad Deen explain on @fox5ny why we believe the SHSAT must go! It's long past time to integrate specialized HSs and ALL high schools.
In which @JamesStewartNYT and I (and you?) prepare to flunk the SHSAT, the standardized test for admission to New York City's elite high schools. https://t.co/wT7RSEI6fc
@GGENYC Girls do better than boys in middle school, take SHSAT more than boys, do BETTER than boys once admitted to specialized high-schools, yet receive LESS offers to specialized H.S. because of the SHSAT as sole measure. Still most of Albany supports the SHSAT https://t.co/FcbPkSbiXp
@afsana_xoxo As an economics major, I'd expect some empirical evidence defending your position, as opposed to your generalized anecdotal experience. You did well in SHSAT, but our argument is that there were students better than you that the SHSAT couldn't identify https://t.co/Ax0CU0ZZ7P
A11224 [NEW] Requires the New York city department of education to study and report on students who would likely pass the Specialized High S https://t.co/SzZZIa6tst
@beenishfahmed@MarkTreyger718@MarkTreyger718 essentially argues he supports a 50 math/english multiple-choice exam as the SOLE measure of merit, well because schools are "bad". Ignoring all psychometric and stats evidence to the contrary. He's simply appealing to his base.
@TonyAvella@TonyAvella repeatedly saying "the test is not the problem" without any empirical evidence doesn't make it so. We have decades of psychometric evidence showing we can't measure a students merit using a SINGLE 50 math/english multiple-choice questions test https://t.co/AfN5kBWzjN
@AGZimmerman@AGZimmerman she does have a point. I'm a fan of @ChalkbeatNY but the reporting on @SuccessCharters does seem a bit 1-sided. Not that the facts aren't being reported, but there are positive stories that aren't.
@danielcincu@CynthiaNixon Even when we adjust for student and school quality, the SHSAT is still biased. When we use GPA, we have better prediction of success. There's really no good reason to use the SHSAT to measure merit in 2018. https://t.co/AfN5kBWzjN
@danielcincu@CynthiaNixon GPAs are not the same, but yet their margin of error is less than a single multiple-choice test; Hence they are better predictors along with state tests. Girls from the same schools, Black kids with the same high state scores BOTH do worse on the SHSAT than their counterparts
