Palestinians have been fired at by Israeli soldiers and settlers while trying to begin the olive harvest in the occupied West Bank.

Farmers and activists arrived to the annual harvest in the town of Beita and were met with tear gas and moved away from the groves.

According to the UN, nearly 2,000 Palestinians have been injured and more than 80 killed by Israeli forces or settlers in the West Bank since the beginning of this year.

Israel’s army said it had sent soldiers to the area to disperse a ‘confrontation’ and that no one was injured.

Olive season is typically a time of high tension between Palestinian farmers and Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank.

Palestinians held a mass funeral on Thursday in Gaza City for more than 100 people whose remains were recovered from beneath the rubble of a residential building hit by an Israeli strike nearly three years ago.

More than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed there since October 2023, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, when Israeli forces launched its military assault on the territory in response to Hamas' Oct 7 attack on Israel. The total death toll in Gaza is thought to be much higher as thousands more Palestinians are believed to remain buried beneath rubble, with the United Nations estimating that more than 80% of the territory's buildings destroyed or damaged.

On this day 26 years ago, the world watched, as Jamal al-Durrah tried to protect his 12-year-old son Muhammad from Israeli bullets that rained down on them in Gaza for 40 minutes.
