NATO today is 100 km from Russians 2nd largest city and you don't see Russia attacking Finland.
The whole narrative about NATO comming to Russia's doorstep in Ukraine is a complete nonsense.
Why was Putin publicly ok with that in 2002 and then suddenly changed his mind later?
Ukrainians never wanted to be part of NATO. They wanted economic relationship with the EU.
Just the same way as Finland had. But that ship has sailed, thanks to Putin.
Did you check the date of that article? Its Feb 22 2014.
Brzezinski is absolutely right here. And Europe was against Ukraine in NATO then, notably Angela Merkel put it very plainly at 2008 sumit. And finlandization was absolutely an option since Ukraine was not in NATO, and its population was against it.
But Putin was NOT interested in this.
He wanted ALL OF IT. And as you rightfully summarized, he miscalculated.
Now, that door is shut.
Ukrainians, including Russian speakers, HATE Russia now and will for 100s of years. Finland and Sweden is in NATO. Baltic is a "NATO lake". 1,5 mln Russians are dead or wounded.
This is how great of strategist Putin is.
This one is on him.
Kennan loved Russia and did the same mistake that Putin did in 2014.
He believed that something like "Ukraine" does not exists. Well, apparently it does. ALWAYS did.
It is when people forget such fundamental things they "misscalculate".
I recommed a thorough history review of the region before making easy jusgments:

@AngelicaOung@ArsenalWade "Just asking questions" but notoriously ignoring the simplest and most cohesive answer.
Occam's Razor is your friend @AngelicaOung
@AngelicaOung@ArsenalWade Yes, I guess something must have influenced him. Like, I dont know, the need to have a cassus belli to cover for his crimes and corruption.
But you cant blame Bush for this (not that he really followed up on that idea in a meaningful way anyway)
No.
Putin admited publicly that Ukraine can be part of NATO because it is a sovereign nation and can choose what it wants.
Which was never happening ANYWAY because majority of Ukrainians were deeply against NATO membership, at least until 2014 when Putin invaded.
Can we just admit that George W Bush made a huge mistake in pushing NATO expansion to Ukraine and Georgia?
I don’t wanna argue over what was or was not promised. Just that…yeah bad call.
Putin made a bad call invading in 2022. We made a bad call provoking him to it. And if WWIII breaks out, we will all be paying for our sins in hell.
@ArsenalWade@AngelicaOung She has a soft spot for dictators and takes their words for granted.
It is never an autocrat making war to cover for his crimes and corruption. This like NEVER happened.
No, it is a fault of sovereign nations like Poland choosing alliances that they feel most comfortable in.
What if Europe's best protection against the next energy crisis is producing more of its own power? ⚡
From rising energy bills to global conflicts disrupting supplies, Europe's dependence on imported energy comes at a cost.
In our latest opinion piece, the authors argue that European wind, solar and nuclear power could help protect households and businesses from future energy shocks.
Because energy isn't just about climate targets anymore. It's also about affordability, security and Europe's independence 👉 https://t.co/51O60yxv2f
@mrSatias@AngelicaOung If your country has a border with Russia in Europe, you dont need to be indoctrinated.
You just ask your parents or granparents. And you know.
The only peoples who died or got wounded in this war by a milion are Russians so far.
You act like you know better what is good for Ukrainians and it is very typical of this kind of colonial approach. Maybe you should ask them if they think Maidan was a mistake. Im sure you can find someone who will provide you with the answer you expect.
@AngelicaOung If you are a citizen you have obligations. If you go AWOL, you break the law and put your compatriots in danger.
Ukrainians do not have a choice, they must defend their homes from things that will be much much worse:
Bucha was documented by survivors, journalists, investigators and satellite imagery.
Years later, the Kremlin is still trying to make the evidence disappear through repetition.
Denial does not erase the record.
