Why Many Misunderstand El-Rufai: The Courage to Lead, Reform, and Build for the Future

For many Nigerians, Malam Nasir El-Rufai’s name triggers strong reactions; admiration from some, frustration from others. But the truth is simple: most people have never truly understood who he is, why he acted the way he did, or what he wanted Nigeria to become. They see the headlines, but not the heart behind the reforms. They hear the controversies, but not the courage that fuelled them.

El-Rufai is not a typical politician. Long before he was governor of Kaduna State, he was appointed the pioneer Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), where he led sweeping privatization efforts to reduce government overreach into business and empower the private sector. That early commitment to transparency and economic reform showed his belief that Nigerians deserve a government that serves, not burdens, its people.

As Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), he faced one of the toughest political jobs in Nigeria: restoring Abuja’s master plan. His choices; reclaiming illegally acquired public land, enforcing urban planning, and introducing a digital land registry drew criticism from powerful interests. But they transformed Abuja into one of Africa’s most orderly capitals, a city that works because systems were made to work.

When he became Governor of Kaduna State in 2015, El-Rufai brought that same mindset. He adopted the Treasury Single Account (TSA), closing hundreds of unauthorized government accounts and recovering billions of naira. He cut wasteful spending, restructured government ministries, and made education a priority, firing unqualified teachers, recruiting new ones, abolishing school fees, and launching a school-feeding program that lifted barriers for millions of children.

These actions were not driven by ego or partisanship; they were driven by a deeply held belief that young Nigerians deserve opportunity, that parents should not pay hidden school fees, and that public institutions must be accountable. El-Rufai even enrolled his own son in a public primary school in Kaduna to show his faith in the public system he wanted to fix.

Yet many Nigerians judge El-Rufai through a narrow lens, reacting to criticism without looking at results. They see a reformer they disagree with instead of recognizing a leader who put systems above sentiment. They focus on one controversial decision instead of the millions of children now in school, the infrastructure built, the revenue growth, and the modern governance tools that extended beyond Kaduna.

Understanding El-Rufai means looking past the politics of the moment and seeing the pattern of courage, reform, and service over decades. This might not resonate with everyone today, but history will remember leaders who dared to rethink how Nigeria is governed; not for fame, but for the future. Let us widen our lens, acknowledge the good where it exists, and judge leadership by lasting impact, not headlines.

I have read, with unimaginable heartbreak, the heartrending news of the brutal killing of a housewife, Hajiya Fatima Abubakar, and her six innocent children in Dorayi, Chiranchi Quarters of Kano. This heinous and barbaric act is an assault on our shared humanity and a grave violation of the sanctity of life, which the trio of our faith, culture, and laws tenaciously hold sacred.

I condemn, unequivocally, this nefarious crime in the strongest possible terms. No grievance, real or imagined, justifies the taking of innocent lives, least of all the lives of innocent children.

I commend the Kano State Police Command for its swift, professional, and decisive response that led to the arrest of the suspects through a well-coordinated sting operation in the early hours of today. The prompt action of the officers involved reflects the unquestionable capacity and commitment of our security agencies to protect lives and uphold the rule of law.

My heartfelt condolences go to the bereaved family, relatives, and the entire people of Kano State over this disturbingly irreparable loss. I pray that Allah grants the departed eternal rest and gives the family of the deceased the strength and fortitude to bear this painful, yet unimaginable, tragedy.

I call on the relevant authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and the diligent prosecution of all those responsible for this atrocity, so that justice is served fully and transparently. Accountability is essential not only for the victims but also to deter future crimes and restore public confidence.

May Allah protect our communities and guide us all toward compassion, justice, and peace.

Earlier today, I joined colleagues at the Special Plenary Session of the House of Representatives convened to address Nigeria’s worsening security challenges. In my contribution, I reaffirmed a position I have long held: Nigeria must embrace State Policing, not as a political slogan, but as an urgent, practical solution to the realities our communities face. Security cannot be effectively managed from Abuja alone.

I also stressed the need to improve police welfare and end recruitment driven by allocation or favor. States should determine their manpower needs, and the process must be digitized, transparent, and merit-based.

Beyond policing, I highlighted a painful but undeniable truth: many parts of the North face a deepening education crisis. With limited opportunities, young people become vulnerable to harmful online influences, including extremist propaganda - a growing and dangerous trend.

I made it clear that leaders, myself included, must take responsibility. While efforts have been made, we have not done enough. Nigeria cannot overcome insecurity without investing in the fundamentals: education, employment, community development, and effective governance.

Ultimately, every reform we advocate is for one purpose: to ensure that citizens can live in safety, raise their families in peace, and build meaningful lives without fear. That is the Nigeria we must all work toward - together.
