"During the critical period of the Strategic Withdrawal in late 1978, the Eritrean freedom fighters faced a massive enemy force heavily armed with modern Soviet weaponry and backed by foreign military advisors. SUDAN — 📢 The European Parliament has, for the first time, adopted a resolution condemning the #UAE's alleged involvement in Sudan.

The resolution also urges the European External Action Service and the Council of the European Union to impose sanctions on individuals, entities, and external actors supporting or enabling the war in Sudan, as well as on private security companies, including the UAE-based Global Security Services Group (GSSG), which it says is involved in supplying Colombian mercenaries, for violating the United Nations arms embargo.

It further calls for cooperation with the UN Security Council to expand the arms embargo to cover the whole of Sudan.

UNHCR Guidance Note on #Eritrea: Fact, Context, and the Politics of Omission

A comprehensive and nuanced response that elucidates the gross factual, legal, and methodological flaws and distortions that characterize the latest UNHCR Guidance Note on Eritrea.

The poignant fact is that this has become almost a ritual pattern with this Agency.

Indeed, this was the case with its 2009/11 Eligibility Guidelines which were circulated to various governments in a rather stealthy manner without prior interaction with, or notification to, the GoE.

For reasons best known to itself, the UNHCR has, and continues to act, as the principal proponent - the Trojan Horse so to speak - of the agenda of "strategic depopulation" against Eritrea. Its periodic reports remain sheer compilations of notorious, NED-funded and affiliated, outfits that harbour hostile agendas against Eritrea.

President Isaias Afwerki met and held extensive discussions, yesterday evening at the Denden Guest House, with H.E. Bankole Adeoye, AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, on continental challenges and particularly on recent developments and trends in the Horn of Africa.

President Isaias referred to the deplorable practices and propensity of extraneous forces to portray Africa as the "poster child of civil wars" esssentially in order to rationalize their insidious acts to meddle in and manage these conflicts. Unfortunately, the AU has so far failed to take remedial measures to rectify these practices. The primary focus should be to prevent the eruption of conflicts instead of funneling time and energy on "managing" wars and crises, President Isaias emphasized.

The AU's structural weaknesses coupled with external intervention are hampering the continental organization from fulfilling the aspirations and expectations of the African peoples. Sadly, the AU has lost the capacity and wherewithal to say "No" and reject the complicating agendas certain countries continue to flaunt to advance their perceived interests.

President Isaias underlined that in Eritrea's perspectives, development plans that are charted out are closely intertwined with the promotion and crystallization of peace and security in the wider Horn of Africa, Nile Basin, Red Sea and Gulf Regions.

On the Sudan, Eritrea's firm and pronounced position has been and remains for the tragic conflict to be resolved by the Sudanese people themselves. Yet, external forces continue to compound and exacerbate the conflict thereby hampering the stability of the region.

Eritrea strongly believes in a strong Somalia that occupies its rightful place in the region. In this respect, Eritrea continues to make its modest contributions in bolstering the Somali National Army and related institutions.

In a brief statement to the Eritrean News Agency, Commissioner Adeoye stated that discussions on developments in the Horn of Africa, and especially on the prevailing situations in the Sudan and Somalia, were both profound and insightful.

Why Does the West Demonize Eritrea?

The greatest challenge Eritrea presents is not military. It is ideological.

For decades, the world has been told that no African nation can chart an independent path without surrendering its economy, politics, and sovereignty to external interests. Eritrea chose a different road—one built on self-reliance, national ownership, and the belief that development must serve its people before foreign approval.

That choice has come at a cost.

Eritrea is often portrayed as one of the world's worst countries, yet many international development indicators have shown progress over the years in areas such as health, education, child survival, and access to basic services. The country itself openly acknowledges that major challenges remain—from water scarcity and climate pressures to expanding healthcare and economic opportunities. No serious observer claims Eritrea is perfect.

The real question is this:

Why are countries with deep corruption, endless conflict, staggering inequality, and vast natural wealth so often treated as "partners," while Eritrea—despite its limited resources and insistence on policy independence—is relentlessly singled out?

Perhaps the issue is not that Eritrea failed the established model.

Perhaps the issue is that it refused to follow it.

A nation that insists on making its own decisions challenges the assumption that dependency is the only path to development. Whether one agrees with every policy or not, Eritrea's determination to defend its sovereignty has become a debate far larger than one country.

History has a habit of questioning those who refuse to conform before it understands them.

The greatest tragedy is that it is the peoples of the #Horn of #Africa who continue to bear the heaviest burden of policies that undermine #peace and #security. Every act of brinkmanship, inflammatory rhetoric, and disregard for the #sovereignty and territorial integrity of states diverts scarce resources from development, weakens regional trust, discourages investment, and prolongs uncertainty for millions.

PP, that turns violence against its own people, can hardly inspire confidence that it will live in peace with its neighbors. Leadership that normalizes coercion, repression, and confrontation at home inevitably erodes trust abroad and fuels regional instability.

Equally regrettable is that those with the influence to help reverse this dangerous trajectory too often choose to look the other way. By extending diplomatic cover, political backing, and financial support without demanding genuine accountability or restraint, they risk emboldening the very policies that fuel instability. Silence and selective engagement are not neutral; they carry consequences for the entire region.

The #Horn of #Africa deserves a different path, one founded on mutual respect, sovereign equality, good-neighborliness, and strict adherence to international law. The region's future lies not in revisionist ambitions, manufactured grievances, or threats of force, but in dialogue, cooperation, and a genuine commitment to peaceful coexistence.

Election Fallout: Zeyse Community in Ethiopia's Gamo Zone calls for investigation after alleged deadly reprisal linked to boycotting vote

ETHIOPIA ― 🚨Residents of Zeyse Woreda in #Ethiopia's Gamo Zone have accused government soldiers of carrying out a deadly operation that reportedly left at least 17 civilians dead and displaced tens of thousands following the June 2026 election.

According to several eye witness reports, the alleged military campaign took place between 18 June and 2 July.

According to these witnesses simultaneously interviewed by Mereb Media and @mamamesay of Anchor Media, soldiers accused residents of refusing to vote for the ruling Prosperity Party before allegedly carrying out a campaign of violence across Zeyse District.

Community members are urging Ethiopian authorities and international @UNHumanRights @hrw @AmnestyEARO organizations to investigate the reported massacre to hold those responsible to account.
