Last night in the Netherlands, Mandera Municipality was honored with the globally coveted Green City Award by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH). This esteemed international body is dedicated to promoting sustainable horticulture and supports initiatives that enhance the green environment through global greening projects and sustainable production practices.

The greening initiative in Mandera began in 2015 under my leadership as County Governor. At the time, many doubted the potential for success, but Alhamdulillah, our efforts have been recognized on a global scale. I am proud to dedicate this award to the 1,300 vulnerable mothers in Mandera Town who have journeyed with us, demonstrating unparalleled commitment to the greening of our town. These mothers, who not only contribute to mitigating climate change but also make a livelihood from it, deserve our heartfelt applause.

I also wish to extend my gratitude to the residents of Mandera Town who embraced and doubled our greening efforts by planting trees in every homestead, creating a true community-driven environmental transformation.

Lastly, I would like to congratulate my successor, Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif, for ensuring the continuity of the Greening Mandera program since I left office in 2022. The progress we have achieved without external support is a testament to our community’s resilience and dedication. Imagine how much more we could accomplish with a little external support.

Kudos to everyone involved—together, we can make a lasting difference.

STATEMENT ON TOXIC WASTE DUMPUNG IN NE KENYA:
A prominent Kenya leader, Hon Cyrus Jirongo, has revealed in a televised
interview that the Government authorised the dumping of hazardous toxic waste
in North Eastern Kenya in 1980s by Western firms licensed ostensibly to
explore for oil. This is a serious revelation, coming from a person who had very
close links with the Moi Government. Leaders from the region have long
suspected this and linked the huge number of cancer and other mysterious
deaths in Garissa, Wajir and Marsabit regions to possible dumping of toxic
waste. In 2016, KEMRI carried out a study in Marsabit area after a cancer
epidemic killed over 500 people, and thousands of animals died from drinking
water from underground sources. At first, it declined to publish the results of the
study and later impudently blamed the deaths on impurities in the water.
Clearly, they attempted to exonerate the government.
As a senator from the region, I published the article below in the media in 2016,
and called on the Government to undertake an independent investigate urgently.
No action was taken.
Once again, we call on the Government to order an immediate investigate by
international experts. This is essential in in order to locate the sites, determine
the nature the hazardous waste, and protect the environment and the residents
from further damage. The Government should hold the companies involved
responsible, including officials in Government, and compensate families of all
those affected.
