Can “smart cities” work for the poor?
GCA’s LLA team is working with @AIIB_Official's Bangladesh Smart Cities Development Project to redefine the concept, to prioritize smart solutions for most climate vulnerable citizens. A supervision mission led by LLA Global Lead @jusharma visited Mirsarai and met with community members, including 50 community mobilizers trained to conduct profiling, mapping and enumeration in their communities. Their data collection efforts inform community deliberations on building climate resilience, for #PeoplesAdaptationPlans. Smart Cities for the poor must prioritize inclusive, informed, and accountable governance; true partnerships between communities, local governments and NGOs to protect precious natural resources and local livelihoods; reduce impacts of slow onset and extreme climate threats; and ensure vulnerable communities can access financial systems to avoid debt spirals. Mirsarai Municipal Administrator Md. Saiful Islam pledged to work with the community mobilizers to support climate resilience.

Empowering Africa’s youth to lead on climate adaptation. 🌍

Last September, in collaboration with @uonbi and @univgroningen, GCA convened the Youth Academy on Climate Adaptation and Leadership, a “train-the-trainer” model for replication in Africa.

The inaugural academy equipped young leaders with the skills to drive #resilience in their communities.
