What an extraordinary young woman. A vibrant storyteller. A hakawati of these horrors. And the progenitor of a remarkable archive of everyday life in Gaza. Gratitude to Bisan Owda.
We resume our series with this episode of “The War on Iran: Seven Months On,” with our special guest Sina Toossi @SinaToossi, in conversation with Bassam Haddad @4Bbassam and Arash Davari @adavari21
In his episode, Sina addresses essential developments and junctures over the last seven months in the war on Iran. He examines some of the contextual topics that have been sidelined or misinterpreted by the media landscape interested almost exclusively with kinetic conflict and gas prices.

🚨 BREAKING — NIAC Action is suing Trump over unauthorized war with Iran. Today, attorneys Alan B. Morrison and Bruce Fein filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of the National Iranian American Council Action (NIAC Action) challenging President Donald Trump’s ongoing war against Iran, arguing that the President’s war is unconstitutional, and seeking declaratory relief.
Filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the lawsuit asks the court to declare that the President’s continuing military campaign against Iran violates the Constitution’s Declare War Clause.
The case is brought by National Iranian American Council Action, on behalf of its members whose families have been injured, displaced, economically devastated and are in continuing mortal danger as a result of a war that was never lawfully authorized.
The complaint establishes that President Trump initiated the war on February 28, 2026, without a declaration of war or other congressional authorization and that the war has continued, including repeated heavy bombardments and a naval blockade, despite this lack of authorization and the passage by both chambers of Congress of an explicit directive to terminate unauthorized hostilities against Iran.
The Constitution assigns Congress the power to declare war, not the President. NIAC Action’s lawsuit asks the courts to defend this core Constitutional protection amid the direct assault on it posed by the unconstitutional Iran war.
The complaint seeks a declaratory judgment that the President is unconstitutionally waging an indefinite war against Iran.

Iran is expanding public mobilization for a potentially much longer war. Officials say a Sept. 18 Tehran parade drew 313K, including Christian clergy. The “Janfada” (“self-sacrifice”) campaign claims 31.5M+ volunteers and is organizing 1,000 "resistance battalions" nationwide.
Hundreds of unveiled runners competed in Tehran in one of the largest displays of defiance since the 2022 "Women, Life, Freedom" protests. Some are calling it a tale of two cities, as veiled women marched in the capital the same day to support the government and war effort.
"I'M AN IRANIAN-AMERICAN & I'M AGAINST SANCTIONS ON IRAN & CUBA. THEY'RE STARVING OUR PEOPLE!"
This morning, Isabella Javidan from the National Iranian-American Council interrupted Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's testimony in Congress to decry the deadly impacts of U.S. sanctions in Iran & Cuba.
As someone who works on natl security, I remain shocked that 25 yrs after 9/11 ppl still don’t understand how destructive the terrorism label is, how racist & politicized. It can’t be rehabbed by directing it at white nationalists or Saudis or Israelis. It must be abandoned

A thoughtful reflection on the drama around the letter to Iranian political prisoners and the material obstacles that prevent relations of solidarity and instead give way to expressions of sympathy.

"An (Alternative) Open Letter to Iran's Political Prisoners," by Behrooz Ghamari Tabrizi
What does meaningful solidarity with Iran's political prisoners look like - especially during war?
Behrooz Ghamari-Tabrizi's invoking article offers an alternative answer: political prisoners should not be portrayed as helpless victims, but as political actors with their own struggles, histories, and visions for justice.
This open letter asks a difficult question for those of us outside Iran: how do we oppose repression in Iran while confronting the violence and imperial power exercised by our own governments?

"Hollow" and "purports" are doing a lot in that letter, whereas the challenge is how to be in solidarity when a state is both (truly) anti-imperialist and repressive.
The challenge is more consequential when you're writing from the imperial core and no antiwar movement exists.
If you wouldn't say it to someone's face, I wouldn't say it online. Doing otherwise, especially under the guise of anonymity, is a cowardly way of speaking.
there are literal rapists and abusers in academia, academics who return to campuses after serving in genocidal armies, academics whose research and inventions contribute to the destruction of our planet. Even if we look at academics whose crime was *to lie* +
