Today is a day of shame in the Ukrainian parliament. The authorities have inserted amendments into the law on the actual destruction of the anti-corruption body, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau. Now it must be subordinated to the Prosecutor General's Office. This is a huge challenge to democracy, a step towards an authoritarian regime.

Ukraine’s Parliament has just voted to effectively dismantle the independence of NABU and SAPO by adopting draft law #12414 in the second reading.

This law grants the Prosecutor General unprecedented powers:
— to direct SAPO’s work;
— to issue binding instructions to NABU;
— to withdraw cases from NABU and reassign them;
— to intervene in high-profile investigations, including against MPs and top officials.

While formally positioned as strengthening lawyers’ rights, the real effect is to establish full control of anti-corruption bodies — a serious rollback from Ukraine’s anti-corruption commitments and EU integration path.

The vote followed mass searches in NABU and SAPO under questionable legal grounds, while their leadership was on official missions abroad.

We believe this undermines the anti-corruption infrastructure and damages Ukraine’s democratic reputation internationally.

European Solidarity opposed this law.
