in the interest of those learning economics that are looking to exit the (neoclassical) matrix, let me post for you six beautiful lectures delivered by @ProfSteveKeen on reception of Friede Gard Prize this year.
@PIDEpk
Wherever you turn in Pakistanโs governance & SOEs, PAS is the problem.
Secretaries dominate boards as PAOs with real control over budgets, appointments & overridesโyet zero personal liability for losses. Boards exist for show, autonomy is fiction, failure has no cost. https://t.co/Tcltl93u0t https://t.co/Tcltl93u0t
As I said on TV the other day: colonial centralism via the secretariat blocks real reform. Read Nadeem ul Haque:
โข Who Runs Pakistan? (PAS at the core)โจhttps://t.co/RZysiovWy9
โข Why SOE reform fails (boards without responsibility)โจhttps://t.co/LjyIZ5QnfB
โข Understanding Pakistanโs SOE problem (ownership without accountability)โจhttps://t.co/YyLBFkU86m
Time to evolve beyond administrative centralism. Pakistan deserves operational autonomy & real consequences for failure
@nadeemhaque institutions are transferring money from student's pocket into their own and calling that education. It's literally a scam at this point. 95% institutes are running a money grab operation and successfully
Britain left Pakistan 78 years agoโฆ yet weโre still proudly running their colonial admin circus! ๐
We โreturnโ the classic British system of:
1. Ex-officio charges
2. Acting charge
3. Look-after charge
All complete with juicy allowances, of course. Same empire playbook, fresh desi flavour. Why appoint properly when you can juggle temporary colonial hacks forever? Rule Britanniaโฆ or should we say โRule by Additional Chargeโ? ๐ #ColonialHangover #PakistanBureaucracy
Dear salaried class, once again you are being misled and ditched, just like in every previous budget. They are trying to give you another lollipop instead of meaningful relief.
They always seem to have enough fiscal space and never need IMF approval to:
- Increase salaries of parliamentarians
- Increase salaries of judges and tax exemptions
- Increase salaries and perks of senators and cabinet members
But when it comes to giving tax relief to the salaried class, suddenly they start hiding behind IMF conditions and approvals.
For decades, they forced us to buy outdated, no-frills gas-guzzlers under the guise of โlocalization,โ all to protect their cronies in the auto industry.
Then they deliberately blocked hybrids from entering the market for years.
Now, electric vehicles are finally trickling in โ at a snailโs pace.
Meanwhile, they deliberately sprawled the city outward to preserve prime downtown estates for the PAS and judges. The result? Every citizen is condemned to travel vast distances just to reach work or the city centre.
On top of that, the PAS has an inexplicable hatred for traffic lights. So they removed them and replaced straightforward routes with absurd, meandering roads that force us to cover twice the distance to get from point A to point B.
Then they turn around and complain about the massive oil import bill.
And now โ the ultimate insult โ they want to slap a new tax on us for driving our cars, even though theyโve left us with no viable transport alternative. In these cities made for cars bicycles and walking have been destroyed as an option.
This is what a PAS-run government looks like.
Sadly, our economists and so-called intelligentsia remain completely silent.
The PAS and the government face zero pushback.
@ShahidMohmand79@MiftahIsmail the like/retweet virus has consumed X..there is no inquiry into what a person actually believes in..rather a quick shallow judgement based on assumptions and biases. I don't think any economist in Pak has raised more voice for the poor than Dr. Nadeem.
Cities should be where the poor come to make a life for themselves even if it is in slums even if it is in crime. History is full of this. But here our cities are for protocol seekers for plot seekers. We have huge mentions right in the heart of downtown roads are closed gets put up to block the poor from operating there.
Street vendors are said to be encroaching. They canโt operate judges tell them to stop operating in city areas while getting their estates protected by police.
All those whose hearts beat for the poor stand-up for making cities hot bed of enterprise for the poor
Otherwise, your empathy for the poor is hollow
RT this a million times to every politician.
it is quite amazing how twitter ppl can't put stuff in context...but again...to put things in context they have to read and that is one thing that is absent from our lifestyles. CITIES ARE FOR LABOR/WORKERS..and...THEY SHOULDN'T BE GOING ANYWHERE...for which they require holidays
Eid coming labor already gone for a holiday. Return in 10 days.
we ALL love a good dramatic lament about poverty ๐ญ๐
Yet the poor? Theyโre out here living their best lives โ taking long luxurious holidays, endless breaks, and sliding into laziness at the first opportunity!
Why work hard for money when you can justโฆ not?
Daily wage laborers refusing to put in extra time for piece rate?
Conclusion: There is no poverty, folks. People are contented. ! ๐๏ธ๐ โ
@ashar_awann if this tweet is seen in context of Dr. Nadeem's larger thesis only then it makes sense :) a worker is no more than a traveller in metro cities..no ownership no belonging. we need to organize economy around cities and that can't happen if they are over-regulated..
@AamerSarfraz@nadeemhaque are cities affordable for the middle-lower middle class worker? can he afford to migrate so that he doesn't have to go back everytime a day/event/need comes around? cities are built around "work" and "workers" do the work and live close by & wealthy live in suburbs..opposite here
