NEW: New Yorkers have started a trend of tagging Mayor Zohran Mamdani to report problems around the city and the fixes are happening so quickly that the videos are going viral.
A dangerous playground hazard was repaired after a resident wrote a letter. A pothole was filled the same day it was posted online. And ahead of this week’s heat wave, the city installed temporary water fountains in Prospect Park.
The message from City Hall: no problem is too small to fix.
Well, the issue is that people know they can just sell their business to a financial institution. a different incentive structure would actually give business owners a reason to train successors instead of having an easy cop out and preventing generational wealth transfer
Maybe I will get crucified for saying this but I fundamentally believe that private equity is a force for good in our society
You always hear stories of the companies that go wrong, but you never hear about the trillions in dollars in value and millions of jobs that private equity has created
A lot more businesses in America would go bankrupt or be shut down if private equity didn’t exist because the owners simply have no interest in running the company anymore
In simple words, more jobs would be lost every single year without private equity
There are a thousand examples of this, and not a single one receives the same level of press coverage
As private equity backed companies scale and grow, they hire more people. Capital gets allocated more efficiently across parts of the economy that deserve it.
Business owners who have worked hard and broken their backs their entire lives to build their business get to retire off the fruits of their labor because of private equity
I’m working with a team whose leadership keeps putting out “industry reports” generated by AI and sent to their advisors that accomplish nothing and just waste time for anyone trying to read the document
I particularly agree that second point except the other caveat is that a subset of people in small companies will use AI to turn out slop to look like they’re bigger than they are and ultimately waste time away from developing their actual business
A friend told me that a year ago her Fortune 50 company was begging employees to use AI
For most of that time she was the only one on her team using AI code tools, shipping great work, getting called by everyone for help
Then in May they put a strict token limit on every employee. She burned through hers in one day and is now having to petition multiple layers of management to get her limit removed
Two things became very clear:
1. It's likely a minority of employees in a company know how to create real value for the company. They've never been told, don't care to ask, or are buried under layers of poor management. A handful of people cranking out their work with AI was fine, but everyone jumps on and the question quickly became do we actually need that thing you're spending tokens on?
2. The potential for a token to increase the revenue of most mature companies is likely much lower than for small companies challenging the mature companies
In other words, tokens are leverage. If that leverage is applied to work that doesn't increase revenue or reduce costs it's purely a new expense
@shadows_united Yeah you pretty much have to tax these acquisitions to the point where it’s more worth it to save for retirement and hand the keys to new workers
Living in a nursing home shouldn’t mean giving up everyday freedoms.
I just signed a bill allowing seniors living in nursing homes to consume alcohol - so that everyone can enjoy happy hour!
youth environmental group doesn’t mention climate like at all… unfortunately “youth” groups are led by ppl too chronically online to stick to one goal. Rough work chipping away at a problem doesn’t give clicks
The left needs to take a serious lesson away from the Chicago elections:
We can't keep splitting the vote.
Medicare for all, campaign finance reform, stopping endless wars. These ideas are popular, but when progressives split the vote, we come up short.
Anduril is like Lockheed Martin in some ways, Like an entire company for guys who jack off in class by moving their legs together in long khaki pants in a suspicious way because they come from a Lutheran household that never allowed them to perceive lotion gooning, and get really excited that every month they get 15 mins in the F-35A sim and get paid $135,000 a year to jerk off pants style in the F-35A sim. If they want to use the F-18 sim it’s like a 45 minute block but then their pants start leaking and they have to go home. Since no women work there they don’t get reported for sexual harassment if this happens but the shift supervisor just kind of blankly looks at them and says “Clean yourself up, we have 4 months to produce 10 non-viable missiles for Israel” before Palmer Luckey gets word that all the simulators are jizzed up and swings the chamber of his revolver around, a satisfying *click* as today was not that 1 in 6 chance of salvation.
It’s surreal walking by the site today. It’s given a small plaque next to a new Hilton property right along the waterfront where most tourists probably have 0 clue and a couple doors down was a building completely covered in maga flags in the run up to the last epedtion
James Brock poured muriatic acid into this pool as black swimmers invited by white guests at his motel staged a protest after MLK was arrested for “trespassing” on the property (the “swim-in” was planned by MLK & others). The acid wasn’t enough to harm anyone (one of the swimmers even drank it to prove the point), but cops jumped in to arrest & beat up some swimmers when the acid didn’t work. The motel was forced to integrate, got firebombed by the Klan & eventually James went bankrupt & the motel was torn down. Crazy story.
They nuke Harvard's funding, which everybody told them was going to lead to Chinese research dominance. China is now dominating and instead of reconsidering their terrible science policies, they're blaming it all on minorities.
These people are insane.
just kinda feels like concerns about crypto energy usage. it was already rising for years to a concerning extent, just came into focus when VCs were dumping money into ads for crypto projects left n right
my theory is that the fears of data centers are overhyped. theyre put down in places that are p bad for locals and suck at economic activity, but much of this infra came in with the cloud compute era of the 2010s
as for whether new centers prematurely dying will cause compute costs to rise probably enough to ever bend the curve on ai slop creation... idrk, but there has to be a point where companies dont find it profitable to keep storing ai slop with bad engagement in 3 yrs
