Good People, our economic indicators in Nigeria have severely diminished. I just completed my back-the-envelope village boy study and the results are troubling. Three indicators:
- The number of active aircrafts parked in Nigeria’s leading local airport at 9pm have dropped by more than 30% from Jan 2023 numbers.
- The number of ships coming to Nigeria have dropped, and most troubling, ships continue to depart Nigeria largely empty. Ask your friends to climb the tallest buildings in Marina Lagos and count occasionally over a week, how many are coming and leaving, and how loaded they are.
-International traffic in Nigeria’s main airport - MMA Lagos - is off by more than 50% compared to Jan 2023 numbers. To do that, ask people who work there to take photos at 8pm WAT, and send them to you from Monday to Sunday.
If supply chain is the engine of commerce, the implication is that if our supply chain is seeing a significant drop, it does mean that our economic activities have reduced. Again, this is not a scientific study, but this is one way I have been using for years to provide a quasi-independent evaluation of where things are.
We need to quadruple our efforts to avert economic paralysis.
It's one thing for you as a Doctor to choose not to lend your voice (your choice) to the current fight for Nurses and their profession, it's another thing to gaslight Doctors that are supporting them. Just cut it out.
Drs have been at the pinnacle of health leadership & their voices will always carry the heaviest punch in Nigeria's Healthcare Space
If you don't want to support, it's your choice. Move on and stop making an issue out of this because "Nurses weren't there to fight for Drs plights". Just ignore those who are supporting and move on.
Some of us are taking a chance to do better, be better and bridge a gap to heal the wounds inflicted by our differences in this profession. If you're not interested, feel free to sit it out.
T for Thanks
One of the worst economic policies in Nigeria since 1999 is the current floating of the Naira. That decision has a score of “F” from me, because despite what any person could tell you, economics is “science” played by the people. And science operates on principles. In engineering, those principles are self-evident: you cannot throw a beam during construction without supporting systems. In social science like economics, you cannot float a currency without FIRST ensuring that you can create parity on demand and supply.
Yes, if demand continues to rise for US dollars in Nigeria and you have no means to improve the Supply of US dollars, you have disarmed the Naira, because market forces will weaken its positioning. This is economics 101; every WAEC Economics textbook always begins with Prof Lord Robbins definition of economics where he posited on the relationship between the “end and scarce means”.
Today, Naira is hitting above N1,400/$: “Naira on Thursday fell to a record low of N1,410 per dollar following strong demand on the parallel market, also known as the black market. " The old system is not bad if we can remove the corruption in it. I have proposed a Rebate System, over the corrupt pre-payment system. Under my plan, we can subsidize via cheap dollars PRODUCTIVE things more effectively.
The summary: if 90 people each wants to buy $100 with Naira, and you have only two people selling each $100 for Naira, whether you use app, bank hall, bureau de change, etc, the price of Naira will go up, because there is no parity between demand and supply here. The impact is clear: lack of stability in the exchange rate makes making long-term investments impossible, pushing the nation into a trading and rent-seeking ground.
The government can ideally do this floating later once it gets a good picture on how to have access to USD dollars via any means possible that excludes borrowing! The unstable state of the Naira is more dangerous to the economy than mismatch on pricing between official and black market currency rates which ironically the Naira floating did not close, making the core reason for the floating largely unrealized. https://t.co/zYGKdG2qzz
According to AO Lawal’s Economics textbook, companies consider the availability of factors of production before they would locate their operations. In that secondary school textbook, there was a section he called “Location and Localization of Industries”.
In Nigeria today, ENERGY is one of the key components of production, and without energy, you have no economy. In Germany, industrial output is fading because cheap energy from Russia has gone. But Germany will be back - they will find a way to subsidize energy for their industries.
Nigeria, by removing fuel subsidy, instead of fixing the corruption which makes production-oriented fuel subsidy ineffective, will trigger an avalanche of degraded production output that will decimate the economy. It is not a smart policy to think markets will pay the full cost of energy when EVERY productive nation in the world subsidizes energy, including US, Japan, China and everyone!
Our problem is not fuel subsidy; our problem is the corruption in fuel subsidy which makes fuel subsidy look bad. Yes, open borders, fake invoicing, etc are not due to fuel subsidies; those are weaknesses in governance. Fix them and give manufacturers in Nigeria the opportunities to compete because at N617 per litre, the only option is closure, since there is no national grid-anchored electricity in our generator economy! https://t.co/5osyyKYhDw
