Harper & Brothers had 20 chapters on the table. Wright's manuscript ran from Mississippi to Chicago, from cotton fields to the Communist Party.

Wright died in 1960. He never saw them printed.
They surfaced in 1977, retitled American Hunger. 32 years after readers thought the story was finished. 17 years after the man who wrote it was gone.
Library of America finally stitched both halves back together in 1991. Same author. Same year, 1945, on the spine. Two different books.
For 32 years, every student who read Black Boy read half a memoir and called it whole.
