Long before satellites and weather radar, typhoons in the Philippines were seen as acts of divine will. That changed in the late 1800s when Jesuit scientists, led by Padre Federico Faura at the Manila Observatory, pioneered systematic weather observation, laying the foundation for modern typhoon forecasting and disaster preparedness.

In 1879, tropical meteorology in the Far East reached a major milestone. Using ten years of continuous meteorological observations, Faura identified the atmospheric signs that precede tropical cyclones. On July 7, 1879, he detected a sharp fall in barometric pressure and notable changes in wind direction, leading him to predict that a typhoon was crossing Northern Luzon. Since no official typhoon warning had ever been issued in the region, the public and colonial authorities largely ignored it.

When the storm later devastated Isabela and Cagayan, Faura's accurate forecast proved the reliability of the Manila Observatory's scientific methods. #typhoon #forecast

While most Filipinos know the story of Ferdinand Magellan arriving in the Philippines in 1521, far fewer realize there was a reverse story: Filipinos also reached the "New World" just 66 years after.

Filipino sailors (known then as Luzon Indios) were the first known Asians to set foot in the present-day continental United States when they arrived on 18 October 1587 in Morro Bay (present-day California), 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝟯𝟯 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗺𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗱.

Nearly two centuries later, Filipino sailors became the first known Asians to establish a permanent settlement in what is now the continental United States. After leaving the Manila–Acapulco galleon trade, they founded the fishing village of Saint Malo in present-day Louisiana in 1763, more than a decade before the Thirteen Colonies declared independence.

Known as the Manilamen, these pioneers drew upon the resilience and survival skills they had developed in the Philippines.

They adapted to Louisiana's hurricane-prone marshes and mosquito-infested wetlands, built thriving fishing communities, and later ventured west, with many joining the California Gold Rush in search of new opportunities.
