Nature Doesn't Send Warnings Forever

Sometimes I wonder if we have become so used to hearing the words "floods in Assam" that they no longer shock us the way they should. That's the most frightening part. A tragedy that repeats itself every year slowly turns into just another headline, while the people living through it are forced to rebuild their lives again and again.

This year's floods have once again exposed how fragile life can be when nature decides to take control. The death toll has climbed to 47 after six more lives were lost in just 24 hours. More than 7.21 lakh people across 11 districts are now battling the disaster, with 883 villages affected. Sivasagar has suffered the most, with around 3.75 lakh people impacted, followed by Charaideo with 1.86 lakh and Jorhat with 1.15 lakh. Over 25,375 hectares of farmland remain underwater, while 103 relief camps are sheltering more than 24,000 displaced people.

But for me, the biggest story is what those numbers hide. Behind every statistic is a family wondering where they will sleep tonight, a child missing school, a farmer watching months of hard work disappear beneath muddy water, and elderly people hoping rescue boats reach them in time.

What also stands out is how quickly we move on. We share sympathy for a day or two, then our attention shifts elsewhere while the people in Assam continue living with the consequences long after the cameras are gone. Recovery is never as visible as destruction, yet it is the hardest part.

The rivers are still flowing above the danger mark in several places, and continued rainfall threatens to make the situation even worse. That should concern all of us because disasters like these are becoming more frequent and more intense. They are not just local problems anymore, they are reminders of how vulnerable communities are when extreme weather becomes the new normal.

I don't think Assam needs our pity. It needs consistent attention, better long-term planning, stronger flood management, and support that doesn't disappear once the headlines do. The resilience of its people is inspiring, but resilience should never become an excuse for accepting the same tragedy year after year.

What does Umar Khalid have to do with NEET?

The protest is against the NEET paper leak and is for the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan.

Umar Khalid is not a NEET aspirant. In fact, when he was at university, he supported and raised his voice for terrorists like Burhan Wani, Afzal Guru, and Maqbool Bhat.

He is the one who raised the slogan - "Tum kitne Afzal maroge, har ghar se Afzal niklega...Tum kitne Maqbool maroge, har ghar se Maqbool niklega".

Afzal Guru, Maqbool Bhat, and Burhan Wani were also not NEET aspirants.

One important update: the Uttarakhand tree-felling protest has won a major pause - but the fight is not completely over.

For nearly a week, ordinary people stood between chainsaws and century-old trees. They hugged trunks, blocked the cutting, protested in the rain and even observed a “Black Harela.” Some were dragged away, two protesters were arrested, and an FIR was filed against around two dozen people. By then, nearly 400 trees had already been cut.

What changed everything was solidarity.

The movement grew beyond a few environmentalists. Students, residents, civil-society groups and political organisations joined them. Their videos spread online, larger voices amplified the issue, and the Leader of Opposition Mr. Rahul Gandhi met a delegation of protesters. The pressure eventually forced the Chief Minister to halt the proposed felling of 4,369 trees and order fresh consultations.

That is how people win:

- A few citizens refuse to move.
- Others stand beside them.
- Powerful voices amplify them.
- And suddenly, a government that wasn’t listening discovers “public sentiment.”

But this remains a temporary halt, not a permanent victory - especially after the Supreme Court dismissed a plea challenging the project. The trees will remain safe only if public attention remains alive.
