A researcher used Claude Opus 4.8 on a $20 subscription to find a bug that could have silently destroyed a $7.8 billion cryptocurrency

• Taylor Hornby was auditing Zcash's Orchard pool for Shielded Labs
• he ran Anthropic's latest AI model against the zero-knowledge proof circuit
• found a soundness bug that could mint unlimited counterfeit ZEC
• completely undetectable; the privacy tech that makes ZEC valuable is the same reason nobody could audit it
• 30% of all ZEC supply sits in the shielded pool
• if exploited, holders would never know they were holding inflated garbage
• Zcash had to secretly coordinate an emergency hard fork with miners and exchanges
• most wallet operators found out hours before the deadline
• ZEC price nuked 30%+ the moment this went public
• this is the SECOND infinite mint bug in Zcash history -- the first was quietly buried in 2018
• Claude Mythos separately found 10,000+ critical vulnerabilities across major software in one month
• one AI model is now better at breaking consensus-level cryptography than the teams who built it

the auditors didn't find it. the devs didn't find it. the market had no idea.
