7 Stoic lessons from Marcus Aurelius:
1. Be tolerant with others and strict with yourself
2. Don't be afraid to ask for help
3. Anger is the opposite of strength
4. No one can make you upset—you choose to be
5. The obstacle is the way
6. Helping others helps you
7. Memento mori
The day you became a clearer thinker, you:
-started by identifying the real goal
-decomposed vague concepts
-framed the right questions
-sought more data or experience
-listened to multiple perspectives
-assessed upsides & downsides
-examined your own biases
-acted like an owner
If you work in tech, #TechTwitter is the place to learn, keep up to date and get inspired.
Follow the right people and you learn something new every day.
Here are 20 tech folks I always pay attention to. They tweet no fluff. Plus details on what to expect when following them:
Elon recently toured Tim Dodd around the Starbase facility in Texas, where SpaceX is building the tallest rocket ever (Starship).
Over 2 hours of footage. It's gold.
Best part: Elon breaking down his 5-STEP design and manufacturing process.
Here it is 🧵
Alright folks, gather round and let me tell you the story of (almost) the biggest engineering disaster I’ve ever had the misfortune of being involved in. It’s a tale of politics, architecture and the sunk cost fallacy [I’m drinking an Aberlour Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch]
The first person pitched me a story. I accepted her pitch and told her what we can pay. Her response was to ask for 30% higher. This is the one thing I never did as a freelance journalist. I still don't! (In July, I agreed to 80 hour work week for 90 rupees an hour)
The biggest generator of long term results is learning to do things when you don't feel like doing them.
If you let excuses or emotion drive behavior, you're cheating yourself.
Put aside the excuses and start doing what you need to do.
Two stunning quotes:
1) Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate. — Carl Jung
2) "Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned." — Buddhaghosa
One class of people who have become loud of twitter of late is what I call the "testing mafia". Every time someone tweets some covid-19 related news that seems mildly positive, they instinctively react "but we aren't testing enough".
I want to take a small maths class here
Suggestion from a small business person: "Union Govt., State Govts, UTs should announce that all deadlines for filing returns of any/every kind are extended by 3months (say), given constraints of social distancing, & extended if lockdowns are extended beyond announced dates."
2) What Should Institutions Do Right Now?
It’s natural for institutions to react to the problem at hand *today*.
But because of corona’s long incubation period and its potential for exponential growth, they need to react to the problems that are likely to arise *in two weeks*.
Yet studies show that school closures are one of the most beneficial 'non-pharmaceutical interventions' (NPI) that can be employed, more effective even than reactive quarantines or banning of public gatherings. Partly, the reason is that *parents* also stay home as a result. 2/
You don't have to learn everything through direct experience. A great advantage is given to those who let the hindsight of others become their foresight.
