Chicago Tribune: City Council blocks $1.25 million settlement for Dexter Reed’s family

Ald. Raymond Lopez, 15th, said Burnett’s statement left him “speechless.”

“What the hell is going on in this room,” he said. “To sit here and say that we are going to give license to individuals to shoot officers when they are pulled over, two days after we just had an officer kill herself.”

Lopez told Fronczak the city’s Law Department should sue Reed’s family to recoup costs associated with the wounded officer’s injuries.

“You all should be ashamed of yourself for what you all are inspiring and allowing,” he said. “You want to settle because it’s cheaper? You are sending a message to every criminal, and you are also sending a message to every officer on the street that their lives don’t matter anymore.”
