Abdullahi - 9 months old - lost his mother shortly after childbirth and is now cared for by his grandmother Sharifa.

Sharifa comes from a pastoral community and once owned more than 28 cows, which enabled her to support her entire family from the milk and the meat.
The drought killed all of her livestock and she had to travel all the way from Hirshabelle State to Mogadishu, to get lifesaving care for her grandchild.

The drought has devastated one community after another, and aid cuts mean that many, many children will not receive care like little Abdullahi, and as a result are now succumbing to easily preventable death.

The amount of empty statements coming from these people is staggering.

You do not have the ability to mediate anything. You do not have the ability to guarantee anything. You refuse to fully back Villa Somalia, and you refuse to fully back the opposition, yet somehow you expect two opposing sides to sit down and resolve everything like this is a routine diplomatic exercise.

Have you forgotten this is The Banana 🍌 Somalia?

Have you forgotten that the political system in Mogadishu survives largely because of your funding, your diplomatic recognition, and your international cover?

Stop pretending you are a bystander.

Pick a position.

Either you believe Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is acting within legitimate authority and support him openly, or you believe he is undermining the political process and should be pressured to leave Villa Somalia. There is no imaginary neutral middle where statements replace action.

The same applies to the opposition. If you believe they are destabilizing the country, say it clearly and act accordingly. Sanctions. Travel bans. Asset freezes. Legal accountability where appropriate. If you believe they are justified, then support them openly instead of hiding behind carefully worded press releases.

But this endless cycle of “maximum restraint,” “dialogue,” “de-escalation,” and “peaceful resolution” has become meaningless. These are recycled phrases repeated after every crisis while conditions on the ground continue to worsen.

Every political crisis in Somalia triggers the same script. The same statements. The same calls for calm. And every time, nothing fundamentally changes except the depth of the instability that follows.

So what exactly has all of this achieved?

The civilians are not safer. The political actors are not more accountable. The institutions are not stronger. The crises are not closer to resolution.

At some point, the international community must stop behaving like a distant observer commenting on events it refuses to influence. It is not an observer. It is a stakeholder. It funds the system, sustains it, and shapes its survival.

That is why these statements ring hollow. They create the illusion of engagement without any willingness to take responsibility for outcomes.

Either use your leverage or admit you will not.

Because this performance of neutrality, while Somalia cycles through repeated political crises, is not diplomacy. It is avoidance.
