The vlogcast features Dr Patrick Harrington, Consultant Haematologist, Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital, discussing the new study on thrombosis risk in MPN patients using QRISK3 Score. Dr Harrington explains the research the team at Guy’s Hospital have done to see if a new way of assessing patients’ risk of thrombosis (clotting) called QRISK3, could be a useful tool for patients and their clinicians to judge their risk of having a clot. The research shows that QRISK3 is an accurate way of assessing risk and is likely to lead to it being used by MPN clinicians from now on.

The Study:
Used the QRISK3 score, a tool developed to estimate a person’s 10-year risk of heart attack or stroke, factoring in age, ethnicity, location, and various health metrics

Analyzed data from >1000 ET and PV patients treated at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital

Patients had a median 8-year follow-up.

Practical Implications for Patients:

Patients can calculate their QRISK3 score online https://t.co/nt6iM8TUgp

If the score is elevated, it’s worth discussing modifying risk factors (like BMI, cholesterol, blood pressure) with a GP

Patients with high scores but no current cytoreductive therapy should talk to their haematologist, especially those around “borderline” age (50s–60s)

Next Steps:
The team hopes to expand the study across more centres and internationally to validate findings beyond a single hospital
