Govandi residents have suffered for decades due to toxic pollution from one of India’s oldest dumping grounds. The area already has some of the worst air quality & health indicators in the country.
Now, the BMC is building a Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plant just 20 meters from densely populated homes. This isn’t development — it’s environmental violence.
Shockingly, Dharavi residents are also being relocated to this hazardous zone under the guise of rehabilitation. This violates basic human rights & environmental justice principles.
The land is unfit for habitation or industrial projects. Decades of toxic dumping have left the soil and air highly contaminated. How was Environmental Clearance granted?

We demand the formation of an SIT to probe how this project was cleared without proper EIA, public consultation, or consideration of residents’ health and safety.

This violates the Right to Life under Article 21 of the Constitution, and defies the Solid Waste Management Rules, EIA norms, and all principles of environmental justice.

We urge authorities to stop the project, relocate citizens to safe zones, and hold officials accountable. Deonar is not a dumping ground for people.
