Today, as always, I join the rest of the international community to celebrate the ingenuity and strength of our women.

Our administration has demonstrably lived the theme for this year’s celebration, ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress’, and will continue to give everything to ensure that we have a society that is truly inclusive by giving equitable opportunities to all.

It is my conviction that we cannot exclude half of humanity and achieve sustainable growth. This is the basis for our policies and programmes, which have become positive reference points in not just Nigeria but in West Africa subregion.

We are not just the first state in Nigeria to have a legislation that compels equitable representation for everyone in terms of political appointments, we have also implemented other policies and programmes, including the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, that struck down biases against any gender. To support women who choose to do exclusive breastfeeding for their children, we have approved a six-month (paid) maternity leave which keeps their rights and privileges as workers.

Women play invaluable roles in different aspects of our society. This is true in our own administration where female officials continue to play key roles. But particularly profound is the everyday effort of hard working women in different segments of our state who spare no sweats to support their families and make their corners of influence a better place.

Today, I inspected one of our administration’s iconic projects, the trendy sugar film factory, which is designed to make Kwara a major hub in the last-mile movie production and creative industry in West Africa.

The contents of Nollywood are increasingly dominating the world, but efforts must be geared towards improving production quality for them to compete with Hollywood and Bollywood. It is important for Nollywood to move from what some may call videos to cinematography.

Our huge investment in the creative industry is to expand the economic base of our state and deepen the creative industry. Everyone sees our state as a civil service state. We want to change that. We want to make Kwara State a destination for high-quality movie production.

So far, so good, I am impressed with the progress of work done by the contractor. More equipment are coming in. Very soon, we will start film production in the state, and people will be coming in from outside the state to do the last mile production of their movies in the state. That means a great boost to the economy.

We are open to partnerships, and we, of course, invite film producers and others in the creative industry to work with us.

Today, I participated at the Sallah Nko festival of Lafiagi Emirate in Edu local government of Kwara State, where some sons and daughters of the community were turbaned as holders of various traditional titles in appreciation of their contributions to the development of Lafiagi.

In my remarks at the event, I reiterated the commitment of our administration to continue to promote our culture and traditions as a strategy to strengthen communal cohesion and promote local economy through culture and tourism.

Like I mentioned at the Ilorin grand durbar a few days ago, we want all Nigerians to also come to Lafiagi. There is an airport here. So, they can always fly in and fly out. As a government, we will invest more in our people and what they cherish so much: their beautiful cultural identity.

I congratulated His Royal Highness, the Emir of Lafiagi, Alhaji Mohammed Kudu Kawu, and the people of the Emirate on the successful host.

I also commiserated with the people on the recent floods in Lafiagi, even as we ramp up efforts to mitigate the effects of this phenomenon on our people through various initiatives.
