it was called project panama.

here's exactly what happened:

1: anthropic concluded that books were the cheapest way to build a world-class model because they gave claude curated facts, structured arguments, compelling stories, and writing “an editor would approve of.”

2: once anthropic decided it needed books at enormous scale, its first solution was piracy.

it downloaded 7m+ books from online libraries including libgen. the judge later wrote that although anthropic had legal ways to buy them, it chose piracy to avoid what dario amodei called the “legal/practice/business slog.”

3: that piracy created a massive legal risk.

so in february 2024, anthropic hired tom turvey, the former head of partnerships for google books, to find a legally safer way of obtaining “all the books in the world.”

4: turvey first contacted major publishers about licensing their catalogs.

those attempts didn’t produce agreements, so anthropic chose a route that required no publisher permission: buying millions of physical books through distributors and used-book retailers.

5: within about a year, anthropic spent tens of millions acquiring and scanning millions of books, including many rare and 1/1 titles. one vendor proposal targeted 500,000 to 2 million books in six months.

6: to scan that many books within months, the vendors physically dismantled them.

a hydraulic cutter removed each spine. the pages were trimmed to size, fed as loose sheets through high-speed industrial scanners, and converted into searchable PDFs. the paper remains were then sent for recycling.

7: these PDFs were fed into claude as training data.

the complete collection became a private, searchable anthropic library that the company planned to “store forever.” the scans aren’t available to the public and were never open-sourced.

A service called ISBNdb facilitates orders of up to a million books and keeps buyers anonymous. Pre-2022 books are premium because they're free of AI-generated text. A federal judge ruled the practice is fair use because eliminating the original means only one copy exists at a time. Anthropic hired the former head of Google Books partnerships to obtain "all the books in the world."

My Take
This got to me. A bookseller told 404 Media that rare books with almost no surviving copies are being fed into this pipeline. Books that survived wars, fires, and centuries of handling are being shredded so an AI can learn to write a better marketing email.
ISBNdb's website literally says "'AI company destroys two million books' is not a headline that generates sympathy," and they still built an entire business around making it happen quietly. They offer NDAs as a feature. They coach clients to call it "digital preservation."

I've covered AI companies scraping the internet, torrenting libraries, and stealing music. This is worse because it's irreversible. You can re-upload a website. You can reprint a bestseller. You can't replace the last three copies of an 18th-century botanical text once someone shreds them for training data. And the judge said it's legal. So it's going to accelerate.
"We shred rare books and offer NDAs so nobody finds out" is a legitimate business model in 2026. What a timeline.

सोचिए... जिस समाज ने किसी इंसान को जन्म के आधार पर ही सम्मान से वंचित कर दिया हो, उस मानसिक और सामाजिक दूरी का क्या ?

इसका मतलब यह भी नहीं कि आज का आरक्षण सिस्टम बिल्कुल परफेक्ट है।मैं खुद मानता हूँ कि Reforms की ज़रूरत है।?
जैसे General वर्ग में EWS आया।
जैसे OBC में Creamy Layer और Non-Creamy Layer का सिद्धांत आया।
SC/ST आरक्षण में जिन परिवारों की कई पीढ़ियाँ शिक्षा और अवसरों के माध्यम से आगे बढ़ चुकी हैं, उनके बारे में भी नीति-निर्माण के स्तर पर चर्चा हो सकती है।
लेकिन एक बात समझिए।
जब राजनीति आज भी जाति पर होती है...
जब समाज में आज भी जाति पूछी जाती है...
जब सामाजिक भेदभाव पूरी तरह खत्म नहीं हुआ...तब केवल यह कहना कि "आरक्षण पूरी तरह खत्म कर दो और सब कुछ सिर्फ़ आर्थिक आधार पर कर दो"
मेरा मानना है कि देश को दो अतियों से बचना होगा।
एक - 'कुछ मत बदलो।'
दूसरी -'सब खत्म कर दो।
'सही रास्ता है- सुधार (Reform), डेटा के आधार पर नीति, और सामाजिक न्याय के साथ समान अवसर।
क्योंकि किसी भी नीति का उद्देश्य समाज को बाँटना नहीं, बल्कि एक दिन ऐसी स्थिति तक पहुँचाना होना चाहिए जहाँ किसी विशेष सहायता की आवश्यकता ही न रह जाए।

Before we get into making a safe examination system, @NandanNilekani must examine the need for any entrance exam. Most exams are territorial power centres and business opportunities.

Take for example CUET. It is the most unnecessary examination Imposed on the hapless Delhi students that made the CBSE scores useless and killed school education. This was done to neutralise the AAP investment in government schools a waste. These kids cannot afford private coaching and a state topper is also denied a seat.

Similarly, NEET is useless for those who want to join a private medical college. The price differential (5 lacs and 1.5 crores) is so huge that at rank 30,000 all government colleges close their admission while even at rank 13 lac, private colleges are unable to fill seats. Private colleges are reserved for the rich 1% of India. If you indeed fighting against reservation and for meritocracy, shouldn’t you include this?

The TET, even JEE advanced, UGC NET etc can be modified to make it a test for those who don’t cross a certain level of education.

We must reduce the entrance exams. We must reduce the number of students who should take the exam. Increase the eligibility. For Ex: Make 80% in boards a qualification to get into all India institutions like AIIIMS, IITs etc. Make school education mandatory. Punish those in dummy schools. Hedge. De-risk. Spread.

Make sure that a 3 hour exam doesn’t become the life altering exam. It will reduce stress. Reduce suicides. The business of entrance exams has to be reformed before we reform the conduct of such exams.

1.काकरोच जनता पार्टी (सीजेपी) का देश की राजधानी नई दिल्ली में संसद के नज़दीक जन्तर मन्तर में पिछले कई दिनों से, ख़ासकर मेडिकल की नीट जैसी विशेष परीक्षा आदि में पेपरलीक व अन्य गड़बडियों के दुष्परिणामों से छात्र-छात्राओं व उनके परिवार के काफी बुरी तरह से प्रभावित हो रहे जीवन को लेकर जारी अनिश्चितकालीन आन्दोलन के कारण सड़क से लेकर संसद तक में ज़बरदस्त हंगामा बरपा है और अब इसका राजनीतिकरण करने से यह मुद्दा सरकार के साथ सीधे टकराव का हो गया है, जिस विषम स्थिति से देश को निकालना ज़रूरी है, क्योंकि इससे दिल्ली में ही नहीं बल्कि विभिन्न राज्यों में भी आम जनजीवन प्रभावित हो रहा है।
2.वैसे चाहे पूरे देश में अयोध्या श्रीराम मन्दिर में चढ़ावा चोरी/ग़बन आदि का गर्म मामला हो या फिर आल-इण्डिया व राज्यों की परीक्षाओं आदि में पेपरलीक का मुद्दा हो, यह सभी मूलतः भ्रष्टाचार के हर स्तर पर पनपने का ही परिणाम है।
3.इसके साथ ही यह संवैधानिक नैतिकता (constitutional morality) से भी जुडा़ मामला है, जिसके अभाव में यह देश को दीमक की तरह खाता चला आ रहा है, जबकि संविधान निर्माता परमपूज्य बाबा साहेब डा. भीमराव अम्बेडकर ने गुड गवरनेन्स हेतु इस पर ख़ास ध्यान देने की ज़रूरत पर विशेष बल दिया है।
4.संक्षेप में मेरा यही कहना है कि देश व जनहित से जुड़े वर्तमान विकट हालात के सौहार्दपूर्ण समाधान हेतु सरकार तथा माननीय कोर्ट जैसी संवैधानिक संस्थाओं को अपनी भूमिका निभाने की पहल करनी चाहिये तो यह बेहतर होगा।
5.साथ ही, सीजेपी के व्यापक हो रहे आन्दोलन का अब विभिन्न राजनीतिक पार्टियों द्वारा अपने-अपने संकीर्ण स्वार्थ में राजनीतिकरण करके सड़क से लेकर संसद तक में टकराव व हिंसा किया जाना घोर अनुचित। सरकार व आन्दोलनकारी दोनों मिलकर इसका शान्ति व सौहार्दपूर्ण समाधान जितना जल्द निकालें उतना ही उचित।

पुलिस से हमें बहुत सारी समस्याएँ हो सकती हैं, पर दंगा नियंत्रण में जिस संयम का प्रयोग हमें दिख रहा है, वह अनुकरणीय है। कई शहरों में पुलिस को वाटर कैनन आदि का प्रयोग करना पड़ा है, पर यहाँ केवल माइल्ड लाठी चार्ज और आँसू गैस से अभी तक काम हुआ है।

उनके कर्मी चिकित्सालयों में घाव ठीक करवा रहे हैं। यदि बच्चे यह कह रहे हैं कि ‘कुछ लोग’ घुस गए हैं जो माहौल बिगाड़ रहे हैं, तो मेरा प्रश्न है कि तुम उन्हें स्वयं क्यों नहीं पकड़ रहे?

सत्य यह है कि बच्चों की संख्या 20% है और दंगाई 80%। योगेन्द्र यादव अपने खतना वाले लिंग पर हाथ रखे क्रांति की राह देखता स्खलित हो रहा है कि अब गिरी सरकार, तब गिरी सरकार। वह कह रहा है कि लोकतंत्र अब सड़क तय करेगा!

विद्यार्थियों को स्वयं के भीतर के कचरे को बाहर करना चाहिए। अब तो @narendramodi तक भी गर्मी पहुँची है, चुप्पी टूटी है। तुम्हारे नाम पर ये पत्थरबाजी, हिंसा सब लादे जाएँगे।

To understand how dangerous Paraquat is....

If a patient arrives at an emergency room struggling to breathe, the very 1st thing a doc does is hook them up to a pure oxygen tank. But if that patient has swallowed Paraquat, giving them oxygen will actively kill them faster.
