Mastodon on the other hand is built around ActivityPub a new-ish web standard. and you can follow people or hashtags there without even having an account, just use ol reliable RSS web standard by simply adding .rss to the url. https://t.co/j6BYtRgxFf

For plenty of people that's to much work. Thing is Mastodon is actually really close to this in practice.

On Mastodon you can put .rss after a profile or hashtag link. So no account needed to follow people over there. Pretty nice

If that sounds like to much work, you can just find an instance with a UI more to your liking. There is beauty in this model you might be failing to appreciate

@drmistercody has been pretty good in my experience. decentralized technical stuff makes it a little tricky / different, but means it can't be bought or controlled, so from that perspective many of the differnces and tradeoffs might be worth it
