Most men set goals that secretly give them permission to quit. The goal is so big, so far, and so unbelievable that failure feels built into the plan. A serious goal stretches you without letting the brain dismiss it as fantasy. Make it large enough to pull you and close enough to pressure you.
My personal truths as a clinical psychologist, for today (July 18, 2026):
People often grieve the childhood they never had.
We don’t only grieve people we’ve lost. Sometimes we grieve things we never had in the first place.
A father who showed up. A mother who could comfort us. A home that felt safe. Parents who were interested in who we were. The chance to just be a kid and not have to worry so much.
And sometimes we don’t even know we’re grieving this until something brings it home. We watch another family together. We see a dad delight in his child. We have children of our own and find ourselves thinking, Why couldn’t I have had that?
You can be 40, 60, even 80 and still feel the ache of something you needed at 8.
We can’t change the childhood we had. But it matters to understand what we missed. Otherwise, we can spend a lifetime still trying to get it without even knowing that’s what we’re doing.
Socially smart people often won’t tell you to your face when they disagree with you because they can sense intuitively that you are too attached to the outcome of the interaction and that you couldn’t handle disagreement. So they will just agree with you… but then you might not hear from them again.
It’s easy to assume this is “fake” when really it’s just what intelligent people do to protect their energy. If you went around saying what you really thought all of the time you’d make way too many enemies, and get in way too many unproductive arguments (cortisol spikes = aging)
Of course the only way to make genuine connections is to say what you really think… but especially if you intend to be deeply involved in society, you must train your intuition to know who can take it.
Honor your father and your mother, keep your mouth shut when anger tries to speak first, do not envy the wicked, do not even think about it, feed somebody who can't feed you back, stay away from the man who always has a plan for other people's time, if you make a promise keep it even when it costs you, especially when it costs you, discipline your children early or you will visit them in places you don't want to see, do not talk about the good you do, never tell your left hand what your right is up to and it's over, be faithful with small amounts before you ask for large ones, don't lie down with bitterness, it grows roots overnight, love your wife the way you love your own body, you don't neglect your own body do you, forgive quickly, not for the other person, for you, because rage is acid in your own jar, teach your children while they're walking with you, while they're sitting with you, when they lie down and when they rise up, and then hope
Nothing has changed in the past ten years. The culture is still feminist and getting more feminist. Trump has done little and everything he accomplish will be erased by the next leftist president. This is why men should ignore politics and focus purely on self and personal relationships. Frame is grassroots. Men change themselves and spread frame. Everything else is meaningless.
Frugality is a trap. You don’t get rich by cutting lattes, you get rich by building leverage. Focus on scalable income, not pennies saved. People waste years budgeting instead of creating. Time is your most expensive currency. Spend it multiplying, not minimizing.
But don't you understand?
There was a way. There was always a way.
We had it within our grasp, because we had already grasped it. The childhoods that you and your daughter had were available because you and your daughter had them.
All that the Boomers, and their parents, the eldest of the post WW2 generations, had to do was...
Nothing.
Just live in the paradise that their ancestors won for them, and make the minimum, the bare minimum, of effort that would have been required to actually sustain it.
That's all.
Just keep things the way they were.
But they couldn't handle that. Their fathers and grandfathers, the heroes that won WW2, made them jealous.
They wanted to be heroes, too.
So, for the sake of their own egos, they had to become Social Justice Warriors. They had to be Champions of Progress and Change.
They had to see the world they inherited as a pile of problems to be solved, rather than a pile of solutions to be cherished and preserved.
So they could feel like they were doing something important.
Almost all of the elder generations, even the ones who call themselves conservative and vote republican, are, in truth, socialist liberal progressives. Because they looked at paradise, and wanted to fix it instead of protect it.
That's why the "republican" option was Reagan, the gun-ban guy, the social-welfare guy, the kiss-up-to-the-commies guy, the amnesty-for-foreign-invaders guy.
Reagan, the Hollywood liberal, the Obama of the 80s, instead of Joe McCarthy, Barry Goldwater, and Pat Buchanan.
Teens can't have a summer job because elders had to be Third-World Compassion Heroes, and give us Hart-Cellar and eleventy-billion barbarians who don't care about civilization, but will work cheap.
Teens can't have a car because elders had to be Climate Emergency Heroes and give us emissions control laws and Cash for Clunkers.
Teens can't have safe schools to learn at, because elders had to Anti-Racist Heroes and made it illegal to exclude violent thugs from our school districts. Just because those thugs generally come color-coded for your convenience.
Teens can't have safe public spaces to hang out in, because elders had to be Compassion for the Underclass Heroes, and release violent savages into society, again and again, with a lecture and a slap on the wrist.
Teens can't have a healthy economy to inherit, because elders had to be Equality Heroes and make sure every corporation that actually did anything useful was punished for not being Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive enough to suit the ideal universe that exists only in their heads.
Teens can't have dates, because elders had to be Anti-Sexist Heroes, and let feminists spend forty years diminishing the social value of men, until you had to a be a billionaire rockstar adventurer to avoid being an unsexy loser by default.
Teens can't even be fit, healthy, and pretty, because elders had to be Sex Equality Heroes, and move women into the corporate workforce in droves, leaving children to be fed by corporate industrial slop factories.
Teens can't have sane, well-adjusted, unspoiled girlfriends and wives, because elders had to be Champions of Sexual Freedom, and normalize unlimited female promiscuity, all in exchange for the largely unfulfilled promise of a little unshaven free-love yeti snatch.
And worst, of all, the crowning irony, the final dead hamster in the water pipe, is that all of this would be fixable, perhaps in three to five election cycles...
Except.
Except the elders don't understand that any of this of this is happening.
They haven't had a child in the household since 1997. They haven't looked for an entry-level job since 1973. They haven't gone on a date since 1981. They haven't been laid off... ever.
They are safe with their paid-off houses and their investments and their pensions from 45 years at the same company and their social security and their medical plans.
It's affecting the youngest generations first and worst. While the elders sit on their cruise ship, surveying the short with binoculars, wondering who all these ragged distressed looking people standing on the shore are.
And why they are holding signs that say "HELP", "THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT", and "YOU STOLE THE LIFE I WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE".
Then they shrug, conclude that these must be the whiny losers, and everyone further inland is probably just fine, and everything is fine, because they fixed everything and they are all heroes, and the Summer of Love was the end of the Problematic Era of History and the beginning of the Great Enlightenment.
And when I am 74 years old, and the elders are all safely tucked into their cemetery plots, I will be torn apart by an angry mob for having white hair, and therefore being "one of them".
And the mob will not care that I didn't get to cast a vote until 1992, for the Man Who Predicted All Of This.
He called it the "giant sucking sound".
Which is apt because it's why everything sucks now.
Parents who raise their kids on realistic content are performing a kind of soul circumcision without anesthesia, and they do it proudly. they buy the little books about sharing and recycling and how divorce is okay, sensible books, vetted books, books approved by some committee of childless phds who decided that dragons are psychologically destabilizing. and then this denuded little creature grows up and wanders out into a world that is absolutely crawling with dragons, real ones, humans who feed on humiliation, women who collect men like scalps, landlords, banks, algorithms, addictions, each one an ancient monster. and the kid has nothing, no stored narrative of the small weak thing prevailing, no memory of stones becoming bread or dead girls waking up. his parents gave him nutritious facts and he stands there starving in front of his first real giant with a stomach full of information. meanwhile some other kid whose grandmother filled him with absolute garbage, nonsense talking wolves, magic beans, boys made of wood, walks up to the same giant and something old activates in him. he knows somewhere deep in the meat of him that giants are a problem with a known solution, that has been handled before, by smaller people than him, with worse weapons
I know two men: one built a garden in his backyard that ate four years of his life, fixed his neighbors porch without his neighbor ever finding out it was him, wrote something once, something heavy i could tell by the way he never brought it up. the other man has a mouth on him that can slice apart any room he walks into, politics, culture, decay, he can dismantle any argument you hand him. he has not built a single thing in ten years. and when you put them into the same room you notice it immediately. the builder has finished something the rest of us are still chewing on. it took me years to see what finished meant. he made his world, closed it behind him, lives in it now. the other man is still standing outside every door he has ever seen with that brilliant mouth full of words about the doors other people build
It's because of the basic psychologies of fascism and communism.
Fascism is a disgust spiral, whose basic commandment is "thou shalt not be worse than me." It starts out with anti-smoking campaigns and burning child pornography, and ends up disappearing anyone who doesn't mow his lawn.
Communism is an envy spiral, whose basic commandment is "thou shalt not be better than me." It starts out targeting captains of industry and genius intellectuals, and ends up disappearing anyone who wears glasses, which create the suspicion that he might have read a book once.
This is why people with communist psychology (the left) equate clean streets with fascism.
Leftists can't keep their streets clean and their lawns mowed, but instead of the psychologically healthy response of being slightly embarrassed and resolving to do better, they decide that anyone in a nice neighborhood is a fascist who needs to be exposed and purged.
You, oh right-wing conservative, watching this video clip, think that leftists are accidentally pointing out the benefits of fascism.... i.e. that people can have nice things.
But if you understood communist psychology, really understood it, you would realize that the mowed lawns, clean streets, and neatly-groomed people are actually another accusation.
Not only are they racists, complains the narrative, they have nicer houses and neighborhoods than you. How dare they?
How dare they not be surrounded by trash and graffiti?
How dare they not be awoken at 3 AM by their drunk neighbors blasting loud music?
Who do they think they are, some sort of superior race?
You don't notice that accusation because you are not the target audience. The target audience is people prone to destructive envy, and the goal is to recruit them to communism.
They don't care if you think this points out the benefits of fascism, or even just the benefits of racism. Because you are not prone to destructive envy, so they can never recruit you anyway.
And it makes no difference if you point out that the end result of this is that every neighborhood is covered in trash and graffiti.
That's what commies want.
Why? Because their neighborhoods are always going to be messed up no matter what ideology is in control. Fascism, communism, liberalism, objectivism, doesn't matter. They are not disciplined enough to do battle with entropy through sustained effort, and not creative or intelligent enough to do battle with entropy through innovation.
But if their house is inevitably going to be surrounded by mountains of trash, just because of who they are, then the greatest comfort they can aspire to is a world where your house is surrounded by trash, too.
This is why communism ruins everything, and why communists cannot be dissuaded when you point this out. Ruining everything for anyone who's better off is what they want.
The trick is to get them to realize that communism allows anyone who is even worse off than they to ruin whatever they still have. Which isn't easy, because if they were smart enough to easily understand this, they wouldn't be surrounded by trash in the first place.

One of the easiest ways to improve your confidence and mood is to simply look up more often. When your head is down for most of the day your jugular veins actually compress, restricting blood flow and triggering dizziness, fatigue and anxiety. Your posture is directly connected to how you feel. Looking down signals defeat to your own nervous system. Look up, extend your neck, keep your chin parallel to the ground and notice the shift in how you feel almost immediately. Your body responds to how you carry it. Give it the posture of someone who is not defeated.
Never build your identity around being the one who understands everyone. Some people are not confused, they are incentivized. Some people are not wounded, they are opportunistic. Compassion without discernment turns you into a luxury service for people avoiding accountability.
Wake up early and say nothing, keep your house quiet, eat what you grew, drink what you poured, let your children watch you fail, let your children watch you get back up, do not yell at your wife, do not yell at your children, do not yell at yourself, work with your hands at least once a week, read alone, pray alone, eat together always, turn the lights off when the day is done, hold your tongue when you are right, hold your tongue longer when you are wrong, give more than you promised, promise less than you can carry, the sick dont visit them with words, visit them with food, bury your dead properly, name the children after people who deserved it, stay married stay married stay married, and then hope.
It happened to me. I went low carb after my heart attack. My fasting insulin dropped. My triglycerides fell. My inflammation markers improved. Everything was moving in the right direction.
Then my HbA1c went up.
My doctor looked concerned. The number said I was getting worse. But every other marker said I was getting healthier than I had ever been.
Here is what nobody explains.
HbA1c measures how much sugar has stuck to your red blood cells over their lifespan. Normal red blood cells live 90 to 120 days. The sicker you are, the shorter they live. In poorly controlled diabetics, red blood cells can die in as few as 81 days.
When you clean up your diet, lower your insulin, and reduce inflammation, your red blood cells start living LONGER. Studies show they can live up to 145 days in healthy people.
Longer living blood cells are exposed to glucose for more days. More days of exposure means more glycation. More glycation means a higher HbA1c reading.
Your A1c went up because your blood cells stopped dying early.
That is not a failure. That is your body healing.
Change internal dialogue to:
> “I am the luckiest man in the world.”
> Be delusionally optimistic
> ASSUME everything works in your favor. Absolutely everything.
Your life will make dramatic change in 3 weeks.
Terry Crews says he beat his depression by imagining someone would pay him a million dollars to sweep a warehouse floor
"And I said, imagine if someone was going to give me a million dollars to sweep this floor. How would you sweep it"
"I had to play these kind of games with my head in order to get over the depression. And I remember sweeping and sweeping, and all of a sudden I forgot about my problems, in fact I was doing something about my situation"
"And I decided to do that about every menial job I ever had"
Hanging out with our friends who have kids has surfaced a model of child development I didn't know existed, and all the moms seem to share it.
Mom view: Every episode in a child's life is accretive and compounding. If kid A says his first words at 13 months and kid B not until 14, kid A is permanently a month ahead, it's purely the fault of kid B's parents, and kid A keeps that edge forever unless they hustle to close the gap.
Dad view: Basically a fatalistic saturation curve. Each kid is climbing toward a genetically-set ceiling, and what varies is mostly the rate of approach, not the height. As all the kids near the ceiling there's less room left to differ in, so early gaps compress instead of compounding. A slow start gets washed out by a faster climb later.
So when mom and dad see their kid can't fit the square peg in the square hole but their neighbors' kid can, mom is like "we have to do something NOW" and dad is like "it'll all even itself out" and they have a hard time communicating on exactly where their disagreement is.
