Can we just imagine for one second what academia would be like if we actually read books before taking offence at them in the national press!? What a dream.
Hope you enjoy the book and the wine, Prof Beard. I’ll be spending my summer writing a book on the politics of classicism.
Ok, Loeb give-away number 3: all 5 volumes of the lovely Greek Anthology, Propertius on the thrills & spills of love, Lucan on civil chaos, Cicero on the meaning of life, & Gellius on trivia worth knowing. Draw will be on Wed 3 July. Just retweet & follow us to be in the running!
Can’t believe people are only just talking about the detriment of ‘TV professors’ to the face of Classics. Fun-fact-ifying a vast subject and treating anything that isn’t Mediterranean as ‘exotic’ is something they’ve been doing since the early 2000s.
Every interaction I’ve ever heard of anyone having with a professor who has sold out to the BBC in the name of ‘engagement’ has been both terrible and patronising. Let young and marginalised academics into the media space. It won’t kill you.
another work banger from today;
'can i have the smores hot chocolate but with a shot of baileys in it'
'so the baileys hot chocolate'
'no i want all the stuff on top'
'the baileys hot chocolate comes with that'
'no i want the smores one'
SIGH
thinking about this woman at work couple weeks back who sent back a mint choc chip shake because 'the only reason I ordered it is because I thought it would have no chocolate chips'. WHAT
