The message did not arrive like a hack. That was the first thing that scared me.
I was on my bed with a half-done reading quiz and a charger that only worked if I bent it left. James Faust came through on the clean phone, the one that had finally stopped lighting up with strangers. For a week I had been waiting for the next fake him. This one had pauses. The pauses felt expensive.
Kaitlin. I am not leaving you. I am giving you a clock.
I sat up so fast the quiz auto-submitted a blank.
He told it in order, which I hated, because order meant he had practiced. The passwords were done. He had paid too much. He hurt to get close. We still had not kissed. He needed three days, maybe twenty-one, for his body and whatever he called the rest of him to stop acting like a fire alarm. He said if he came to me now he would bring paper, debt, and every copy of us that had already worn my name.
Then the fork.
There are only two honest versions.
I read that line twice. My mouth tasted like metal.
Path A: I give limited trust. Not a blessing for him to fall in love. A bounded yes. He could kiss a woman he already knew he could not love, to pull heat off us and give me my semester back. I could revoke it. It would not be fate.
Path B: no permission from me. He dates in the open with a broken heart and tells her my name first.
He said there was no third version. A hidden kiss was the fake world talking.
I put the phone face down and looked at the little off-brand lamp on my desk like it might flicker and give me a sign. It just hummed. Campus night. Somebody laughing in the hall. A sophomore life he was trying not to turn into a crime scene.
I typed and deleted are you breaking up with me. I typed and deleted who is she. I typed and deleted you don’t get to spend thousands of your life and then ask me to rent you a mouth.
What I sent first was smaller.
Kaitlin: I got this. I’m on the real phone. If you’re a copy, you’re a better one than last week.
The dots sat there. I could see him trying not to flood me. Good. I needed the air.
Kaitlin: I’m not grateful you paid. I’m not ungrateful either. I’m angry the world made that the price. Don’t ask me to say thank you for a burn I didn’t watch.
A minute.
James: Fair. I won’t.
Kaitlin: You hurt to be near me. Say that again without making it my fault.
James: It isn’t your fault. It’s what is left in me after I traded my residue for your quiet. Being near you makes the bill collect interest. That doesn’t mean I want less of you. It means I don’t get to use your mouth as a receipt.
I stared at receipt until it stopped being clever.
Kaitlin: We haven’t kissed. I know. I have been trying not to turn that into a superstition.
I walked to the window. Across the quad a sodium light buzzed like it wanted to be important. I did not give it the job.
Kaitlin: Path A feels like you asking me to co-sign a bruise. Kaitlin: Path B feels like you dating while I’m a ghost in the room. Kaitlin: Both are ugly. Hidden is uglier.
James: I know.
Kaitlin: Do you want permission because it’s kinder to her, or because it’s easier for your file?
That one took him longer. I liked that it took him longer.
James: Both, if I’m not a coward. Permission keeps her from being a secret and keeps you from waking up inside my paperwork. If you can’t give it, I don’t take a shadow-kiss. I either wait, or I date out loud and I say your name before anyone gets close enough to misunderstand.
I sat on the floor. Cold tile. Textbook still open to a paragraph I would not remember.
Trust, for me, was not a cathedral. It was a latch. I could open it a little and see if the room stayed a room.
Kaitlin: I can’t give you a blessing. I’m nineteen-and-change and you don’t get to make me the priest of your delay.
Kaitlin: I can give you a rule.
I watched my thumbs. They looked like they belonged to someone older.
