School of East Asian Studies at Sheffield University. Unapologetic migrant. Researching post-disaster recovery, materiality and affect & a lot of nonsense.
This wonderful volume on #socialjustice after disasters if finally out. Here’s our contribution exploring disaster affected communities’ perceptions of social justice in #japan through the much contested topic of post-disaster tourism.
@TimiIhaza@mk098a If 2 people willingly sleep together that results in pregnancy, the odds are they also discuss the issue of abortion together and are able to jointly decide. The issue here is that this subjects women whose pregnancies started from more complex circumstances to male approval.
REF is emblematic of a research culture obsessed with designating universities & departments as "winners" or "losers".
Instead of vice chancellors fawning over today's #REF2021 results & hijacking the work of their staff, they should address the crisis in our universities.
Guess who is graduating today? Massive congrats to my colleague and former SIID RA @aevainio- now Dr Vainio! Excited to see your next steps! @IGSD_Shef
Over the last year, we have been publishing contributions from members working in the context of 3/11 and its aftermath. On the 11th Anniversary, we brought this online series to conclusion by @aevainio https://t.co/2aT0DlL55b
It’s the 11th anniversary of #311 and we have wrapped up our year long series of ethnographies on the disaster. I’d like to thank all the contributors and share my own final reflection here as we remember the events and those that perished in the tragedy

#USSStrike#FourFights@ucu
Important new article by @BrackleyJ looking at the finances of @USSpensions participating UK #universities.
Finds that 59 institutions made £3.6bn surplus during 2020/21 at the same time as they cut 2,600 jobs.

BREAKING: The Universities Superannuation Scheme Joint Negotiating Committee has today formally voted to implement cuts to future #pension benefits for tens of thousands of UK university sector staff.
This certainly seems to be the situation at Sheffield: fewer staff, bigger surplus. The pension cuts @UniversitiesUK want to force through are to protect those surpluses, not to protect the ‘student experience’.
This BBC graph shows the incredibly low investment in the NHS by the Government from 2010 to the pandemic
It’s a major reason why we had 100,000 staff shortages in early 2020
And why there were millions on waiting lists even then
We wish everyone knew this context
This is my 4th year of uni where strikes have coincided with my studies, however I always will fully support the staff. They’re underpaid, overworked and still provide brilliant education for us. They always go above and beyond and continue to whilst on strike #OneOfUsAllOfUs
BREAKING! We reached an agreement with @KingsCollegeLon on the statement below on #USS. Key points:
- no need for contribution rises
- we can and should protect existing benefits
- governance reform
- divest fossil fuels

Seeing a lot about #WhyImStriking over the last 3 days, including stories of precarity. Time to share mine.
A month ago I spoke to The Guardian. I spoke anonymously because of stigma and shame of both gender violence and precarity.
I am "Siân Jones" #OneOfUsAllOfUs#UCUstrike
🚨UCU members at universities across the UK begin three days of strike action today in defence of pay and pensions and to fight against pay gaps and job insecurity.
